Infrared should NEVER be used for gaming controllers.
EDIT:
btw, the fact that it is IR is why there was the huge delay. |

Wow, that is probably the crappiest pad I have ever seen. My Mom got our friends 2 wireless foam pads for Christmas for like $10 each and they were much better than this thing looks. (It was good enough that I could almost clear Max 300 in heavy on it wich is pretty good for a foam pad). |

How fast do infrared rays travel?
*thinks back to basic physics learned in middle school*
Oh yeah, 186,000 miles/sec, the speed of light, the same speed that the signal travels through your wired controller.
Poor construction caused the delay, not the infrared signal. |

Ok so the beam travels at the speed of light.
Now explain why every single IR dance pad has horrible delay.
You do realize that the signal has to first be converted from electric data to the infrared signal, then back to electric? |

This takes an insignificant amount of time, and does not affect gameplay.
What you are saying is akin to saying "Nintendo's Wavebird controller has to convert the electrical signal into radio waves first and then send them to the gamecube and convert back to electricity, which causes horrible delay."
Anyone who has used the wavebird knows that there is no more delay than there is with a wired controller.
As to your initial statement, I highly doubt you've played on "every single IR dance pad." |

Wow.
They stopped selling the DDR pad I once bought there. There is a minor crack, but plays perfectly since the day I got it.
And it's now almost a year in. |

No, I haven't played on every single pad, but quite a few. I've also heard not one report of an IR pad being on-sync.
The facts seem to be that IR controllers have lag for some reason. I'm no engineering/physics/whatever whiz so I can't explain it.
RF controllers don't have the lag problem though.
If you can find an IR pad that seems to work fine . . . more power to you. |

Great idea to go wireless. Too bad the actual pad blows. Maybe Konami will get a jump on this wireless idea when the PS3 rolls around...? Just a thought. |

Why iR Controllers slow when they travel at the speed of light? Simple... The pad takes time to Modulate the data to be transferred over and When the reciever recieves it, It demodulates it to what given data it is..
The speed of the data is limited to the Infrared LED's "Cool-down time", in which it's the time it takes for an LED to "turn off", just like turning off a light bulb as you can see it rapidly the filament dim out. When the cooldown frequency of an LED is longer than the data that you're sending, you're going to get error in the data.
This means the Data is being sent to a slower rate than a wired PS2 could, plus the time for the data to be modulated so that it's fast enough for the PS2 to Read
Hence.. the lag...
Hence, Radio Waves are the way to go!! |

While what you are saying might apply when you are sending large amounts of data, it does not apply to something as simple as a game controller.
With a wireless DDR controller, the data you are sending through the IR signal is ridiculously simple. There are only ten buttons, and about 5 are active when you play a game. Signals are as simple as "this button is being pressed now."
The amount of time it takes for the system to interpret data as simplistic as this is not significant enough to be have any sort of effect on gameplay, even when playing a music game. |
