My friend and I were at a movie theater tonight playing PIU. As we got on the pads, a group of (really preppy btw) teenagers walked by. One smirked and said "Who wants to play DDR?" He said "DDR" in a sneering voice. The obviously spoiled, preppy, pampered girl who was clinging to him scoffed "Not me." It wasn't even DDR, it was PIU!
There are, I need not remind you, plenty of cases of us loyal players being mocked for our playing.
This incident really got me thinking. Why are there so many people who outright ridicule dance games? There are those who openly mock players and tons of people who, everytime DDR is mentioned, get a bit stony faced, as if they don't even like the subject brought up. Why the hell is this? Why do so many people hate dance games, why do most people (mainly teens) hate the subject being brought up, and why are we mocked in public?
There are even still those who watch in awe and ask us how we do it. What makes them love us while others hate us? Is it because, in their ridiculous conformity, teenagers can't stand to see other teens doing something that they wouldnt ever do because it draws attention to you as an individual? Do they think we look stupid? Why is it?
While we're discussing this, please feel free to share any stories of being mocked or seeing people get mocked for playing a dance game.
It really annoys me when people are like that. _________________

It's like anything; a lot of people look down on something (or pretend to) because of their own insecurities; they might be really bad at it, or even secretly like it. Or they may just plain not care for it. It's not something that's video-game specific. You'll find there are a lot of people who act like that toward many things. |

Most people consider any form of dancing sissy. I did until my sister asked me to try her new DDR game a year ago.
Then there's the "why would you want to play a game like that?" factor. A lot of people think the concept of a dancing game is ridiculous when one could turn on a radio and move his feet. |

Hmmm - the fact that they referred to it as 'DDR' specifically speaks volumes. Obviously they know exactly what it is and what is is about. 'Tis Kelly hits the nail dead on with the insecurities theory. DDR takes a year before you can really play heavy songs worth a crap and most people aren't up to the challenge. I personally can't stand a game that can be mastered in under a month- this includes games like Halo, and fighting games.(I'm talking core skills, not memorizing all the levels and secrets) while these games are great games, they just don't have the exponential skill factor of a game like DDR. Ever see 'Gangs of New York' ? When they walk by talking their shit I would just say 'challenge' and when they say the don't play tell them they can play beginner and you'll play heavy. Then just beat their arse (and possibly steal their dates ). As a thirty year old I can tell people on this site tend to be much younger. There was another thread about DDR dying out, but the point is you have to play for yourself. I play DDR all alone with no one watching and I fail half the songs I attempt because I dont give a shit about what other people think, even in the arcade when I lose my credit on the first song. Even if I was the last person on earth playing it I would because it is only me that I have to prove anything to. You will find that when you ignore the opinion of others they will cease offering it to you. |

...ridiculous conformity |
That's why. The popular kids have decided DDR is dumb. Therefore, DDR is dumb. I'm sure a lot of the DDR haters would change their minds if they played the game for a little while. However, they would risk being "uncool", a fate worse than death. Gotta love high school. _________________

haha yeah i love it. we've had to chase these tards outta arcades on many occasions.
and yeah, most people just think the idea is ridiculous, not realizing its fun, good exercise etc.
and i've had friends who said they'd never play and think its dumb... that is where homepads come into play. as theres no crowds, no1 to laff at ya, this is where people need to be introduced, because its the best environment to get into it.
but the fact of the matter is: no matter, no matter where, there will always be people to ridicule anything, can't change it, don't bother, besides, ignorance is bliss they say, and if you ignore the people who try to distract or annoy you, they get pissed and leave haha.
and heres a small point: i was bowlingthe other night, and the alley had an Exreme and i look over and theres this 30-35yr old guy playing with a couple of his buddies watching, he wasn't of any god skill level but hey, he was still playing in a public place. and that "high-school" comment... yeah, thats how kids are, especially with all the cliques and stereotyping and all that nonsense... i had fun with that as i could walk up yo any group and not be shuttered out, and when u can do that u truely realize its all just bs. _________________

-they dont understand it so chances are, they arent gonna like it
-they are cocks who like to harrass people like that for no reason because they think they are funny
-to the average high school groupy.. ANY VIDEO GAME = not the cool thing to do
i love the ones that act like they like DDR or watching you play, and ask so many jack-assy questions, but its obvious that they are just feeding you crap and laughing at you behind your back
..i cant really talk though.. hell i make fun of the kids that sit together and play Dungeons and Dragons before school, so i guess we all got a little jack-buttocks in us, dont we? _________________

I get people like that at the arcade I go to ALL THE FREAKING TIME. I would have to say that, yes, those types of people share the same idea about DDR being stupid and a waste of time, but they also think how dumb people look when they mindlessly stare at a screen and move their feet really fast. Of course, this is what THEY think, and I'm actually glad that they hate it, because I don't want pricks like that playing my all-time favorite videogame. If they go up to my face and mock DDR, I'll mock em right back. Hell, I'll fail the god damn song for an arguement like that. I really don't care what they say or think, but if they say it to my face, they better expect a verbal smackdown.
Also, It does annoy me that people refer ALL dancing games to as "DDR" even if it's completely different. DDR has made the most impact in the US, so the people who don't know about any other game, will naturally call it that because it really is the same thing to them. Even then, I'd still have to say they continue being idiots so they don't find out more about the game.
I don't know about you people's but I don't want DDR to be open to everyone in the world. It is a constantly expanding community, but seriously, I'd rather them make fun of the game then play it with me and make my PERSONAL experience hell. If they REALLY wanna start trouble with me, I'll just take it outside. No matter what, there's always a place when someone crosses the line, and for me, that line is when it isn't even their business anymore. |

WHY PLAY DDR AND STOOPID VIDEO GAMES WHEN YOU CAN BE COOL AND WATCH THE OC AND MTV AND LAGUNA BEACH AND POP YOUR COLLAR AMIRITE LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!.
*ahem*
Excuse that rambling up there, purely for mocking preppy losers. But yeah, whatever they don't think is cool isn't, because high school sucks and thats usually how it all goes. They're the spoiled little brats who always have things their way, so something else comes along and they don't like it: suddenly its so evil, so lets make fun of it and feel cool!
Thank god for college, you can actually get away from most of those jackasses. _________________

I've never had any experiences where DDR was a bad thing..at least I don't think. Mostly it's just accepted as another hobby, whether or not the people I'm talking to like it themselves. And no, I don't think they HATE us.. They just don't get it.. and need something to insult. : P And you shouldn't victimize preppy people. While they are shallow, there are still some nice preps out there. : ) _________________

You're lucky.
You see, at my arcade, they put the machine right next to the glass window in front, and it's in a mall, so many many people walk by and see. This does mean many people will stop and watch a round of DDR, but this also means that there are a ton of a-holes who will pretend to play out on the tiles of the mall, acting like a complete idiot, or even (this has happened many times, including one time to my friend how had a broken arm, in a cast, at the time) running in and pushing us off the dance pad, or unplugging the machine.
It gets so irritating, but the reason why people don't like us is the same reason anyone bullies. They do it to get attension. They figure that since we're getting spectators while playing, if they try to make us look dumb, then they'll look even cooler, especially to their friends. I realize this sounds like a completely idiotic theory, but most of the time, it's true. I mean, come on, how often do you see just a single person making fun of someone playing DDR? They do it to show off for their friends. Of course this loops around to where the friend wants to look cool as well and automatically starts hating the game. This feeling is passed on continuously until lots and lots of people all over the place dislike the game and anyone who plays it.
Honestly, this is just about the same as prejudice, but I don't think we can get DDR Player enlisted as a race. xD
That, or they don't give the game a chance. They think it looks too weird so they decide to make fun of it, like they probably would about anything that they thought was weird.
There's really not much we can do but ignore them, unfortunately. That, and report them to the arcade so they make sure to ban specific people. _________________

Do any of you realize how close minded you are being? You doggy that people mock you for playing a game then turn around and mock them and sterotype them.
I happen to be on of them "Wear polo shirts (popping your collar looks retarded), and watch MTV" but I've been playing DDR since 2001 when the only machine you could find on the East Coast was a 3rd mix (hell, I still remember DDR4th Plus coming out and my arcade getting it right after it came out).
My friend is a total jock but he owns most the people in my arcade with AA Bag 1x, flat, and I am pretty good with doubles. Once we saw some elitist nerd kids that try mocking us...then we chased them and almost kicked their asses (kind of stopped caring when they ran into the mall). |

I agree with Tis Kelie ( sorry if i made a mistake in ur name ), these poeple just look down too the people who are better than them, because the feel to be inferior, so they just push the person down to make em feel better, that's a fact... Just ignore them, they will probably someday try DDR who knows?
And a little tip : When you see someone trying to push you off the pad, just wait at the last second and move away, look at them falling, it's funny (better to have no one playing ont ur side bcause the guy may fall on him) _________________

They're all jealous. Either that we have the bravery to play the game and they don't or that we can actually play the game and they can't or gave up early.
So HA to them.
... okay, but unless they prove otherwise, we can hold that against them of we want...
But just watch, some popular-looking person somewhere out there could get up on the machine, rule at it, and still say they hate the game...
Well, my friend says "nobody dances like that" and the demonstrated like some cheesy beginner-mode-style move. Yanno... guess she's under the impression that it's natural to return your feet to the middle like that...
So yeah. Otherwise, I wouldn't really know...
... Mattman has a point; you can't stereotype people, though. Man, I get involved in that so much in cartoon pairing discussions... |

Why do people hate arrow-smash? Because it makes you look stupid. No really, it does. I just don't care how it looks, which is why I play. Everyone who complains needs to stop caring about other people, because no matter where you are or what you do, there will always be people who ridicule you. You can choose to put value on what they say, or disregard their words as worthless. _________________
