Well, I just discovered this problem a couple days ago..
my pad has some caked on dirt from my feet on the left arrow, and the center.
I have a Vortz ignition pad and it works in very good condition. I want to try to clean the top of the pad w/a sponge or something, but I'm afraid that I'll mess up the pad, any advice?

use a damp rag/sponge it should be ok if u use soap u could possibly ruin the paint on it but as long as you don't have a rag/sponge dripping with watter and get it near any cracks/openings that could possibly have contact with the mother board then you should be ok
