Backing Up Beatmania Hard Drive

I was wondering if anybody has sucessfully made an image of their Beatmania (or any konami) hard drive for backup purposes? It's easy to do the roms but the drive doesn't have a partition table and makes linux go crazy during any accesses to the drive (seek errors). If anybody has been successful I would really appreciate hearing how they did it. Everybody knows how fragile hard drives can be, and finding a replacement drive for a beatmania is next to impossible.
