PIU USB Pad Question

So... I have a spanking cool lappy that will run SM. I got me some stepfiles for PIU, since I suck buttocks at it and need to practice. We got the USB PIU pads, the ones where the first pad is USB and the second pad daisy-chains to the first with the PS/2 port.

I plugged the pad into the USB on the lappy. I get the "bling-bloing" that tells me that XP knows something is plugged in to the USB port. But SM doesn't recognize that it's there, and neither does XP (under game controllers)

My USB ports are fine - RODPI IS recognized under the OS. Am I missign something? Does it need to have both PIU pds for it to properly recognize?

I'm running XP home SP2.... Help!
