Mapping Mat on PC

I'm new to this whole DDR thing. We just got Stepmania and have a bunch of songs and 2 mats and the the USB converter, and most everything works fine, except when you try to do two steps at the same time. I've read that I just need to remap the mat, but I don't see any other way to map it than how we've already done it. Any help anyone could give on this would be great. We're using PS mats (they're pink and blue and say "Stay Cool" in the middle). Thanks!

Care to tell us what way you are mapping the mat? Option menu?

I'm doing it in the option menu. Just went through and assigned the left, right, up, down with the arrows on the mat, used the top corner squares for the up left, and upright options, and assigned the start and back button. That's all we mapped because none of the rest made sense.
