Hoo boy. In before a wave of DDR fanboys insist this proves ITG is liable, despite the fact it's only a complaint and Konami have the legal right to complain about anything, followed by a wave of ITG fanboys yelling about how Konami are stupid and need to shut up.

Interesting...surprised about the MC Katz thing since aren't madkatz making pads for DDR With MARIO or some other game (or am I thinking of something else)?

This is both good and bad. Good because it means companies won't be making crap like MC Katz and other horrible dance-game knockoffs so easily anymore. Bad because good games like ITG will probably have another hurdle to overcome. As much as I dislike the mentality of ITG, I give it a lot of respect for what it's done and unless a new DDR comes out soon (which I keep hoping for) ITG is the only thing we have to look forward to.

My favorite complaint from ITG fanboys is that "Konami is just a bunch of sore losers and making a big deal over nothing!" Bloody idiots, it's a VERY DESIRABLE thing to have a monopoly on a market, Konami sure as hell isn't about to sit back while people use their idea.

Well, let's see what happens!

They're making the pads for Exceed, the Pump it Up release in the United States.

desirable for the company, yes. it's pretty terrible for the consumer though. imagine if there was only one brand of milk in existence. would you want to spend $50 on a gallon of milk because of the lack of market competition?

And if you don't think this same thing is happening with konami and DDR, take a look at how much a dancing stage fusion machine costs.

konami can't possibly claim rights to an entire genre of video games. you can own rights to hardware and music, but not to a genre. I doubt this will make any real impact.

If it turns out that they hold the specific patent on it, and that patent holds up in a court of law, then I think they actually can (claim rights to the genre). Of course, as was said by LostSage when this first started, courts *really* want companies to settle, so Konami is probably just going to get a lot of money from this+royalties, unless they mention more injunctions and the like in the amended suit.

See, this is different than a gallon of milk, which many people consider to be a necessary purchase, and if it was $50 a gallon people would QUICKLY find substitutes like soy milk or just drink something else. As much as we love DDR, if Konami charged $200 for some absurdly stupid reason for a CS copy then no one would buy it and the series would tank.

I don't know how much a DS Fusion machine costs, but a new DDR machine costs around 8-10k or so. Arcade machines are usually fairly expensive, and if a game is known to be popular and a money maker than then they'll charge more for it. Every game company does this, KOF Neowave cabs were extremely expensive when they were released but arcades still purchased them, and just think of how many fighting games are on the market.

you're talking about target consumer though. sure, perhaps not every person needs a DDR machine, but every successful arcade I've ever been to has one (including the one I work at, so yes I'm fully aware that machines cost thousands of dollars).

a DS fusion machine costs over $15,000. Are you aware of how bad the songlist for this, the newest mix from konami, is? Can you begin to see where I'm going with this?

Songlist means jack. If it's at an arcade, people will play it. especially if it's the only machine in the area.

again you people are missing my point. the quality of the product is decreasing while the price of the product is increasing. good for the company, very bad for the consumer. It's pretty much an economic fact that monopolys are very bad for the market, and very good for the company that holds the monopoly. Why in the world do you think microsoft had legal action taken against them? If you can prove to me that a monopoly is good for the consumer, I'll be glad to listen.

I wish there were a Court of Ultimate Justice that had the power to punish companies and people that file frivilous, evil lawsuits and otherwise behave without decency.

If I had the power to, I would completely shut down Konami for this. No warings, no fines, no appeals: Konami would simply be banned from ever making or selling anything again or doing any sort of business with anyone, their executives would be put out on the street, and their lawyers would be disbarred.

And then the next time a company was tempted to do something stupid like this, they probably wouldn't. That's called "making an example". It's tough, but it's fair.

Oh, but they have.

Konami has to protect their property, yet I think its silly to sue madcatz. Sure they can have a patent on a videogame generea, but they shouldn't wipe out competition (no matter how much it copies the original). Dont get me wrong, I like ITG, its just a blatant ripoff of DDR.
Withouth DDR there would be no stepmania, and without stepmania, there would be no ITG.

EDIT: and might i add, IBTL.
