... is there any special reason that DDRFreak chooses to limit avatar size to 64x64? It always surprised me, because about 90% of all phpBB forums that I go to use the standard 100x100 avatar size.

I'm not complaining or anything. I just was wondering if there was any specific purpose behind the smaller than usual avatar sizes as compared to most other internet forums out there? nerd.gif

The DDRFreak admins set it so that that is the avatar size limit.

Something about not seeing a reason to need a bigger image.

Possibly a bandwidth issue.

DDRFreak don't host the avatars so it doesn't cost anything for bandwidth.

I was gonna say that, but you could also say it's a bandwidth issue in terms of overall pageload time. Larger avatars mean that it takes more bandwidth from the user's perspective to load the page.

I like the 64x64 limit on avatars. I've been to forums that allow up to 150x150, and its incredibly annoying to have that much of the screen taken up by a stupid picture.

What I DON'T like is the filesize limit. For my avatar, I'd really like to have had just a few more kilobytes allowed. As it is, my avatar file is really only 32x24, and the forum is resizing it to 64x64. I wish I could make it 64x64, but then the filesize is too big.

The avatars are resized because there's no way that we can selectively enforce size restrictions on avatars. If we just use HTML to force resizing, then nobody can ever break the forums layout (be it inadvertent or intentional).

And we did just recently bump up the restrictions on avatar filesize. Nobody says you have to have an animated avatar - it's perfectly reasonable for some minor animation. Remember - we don't set these limits for our own sake - we set them so that users on low bandwidth connections don't start to hate you for your...artisticness.
