What throws your playing off?

Like distractions that can go from a$$holes to kids to steps.

What throws me off is notes that are clumped together, and you to be on beat the whole time.

I was playing tsugaru apple mix, and my gallops were off, so i began to step too early for the rest.

Kids, are a nuisance, like the little kids, idiots who think they're better than everyone or just steps.

This subject is a bit more broad, this thread only half fits in there.

A lot.

Usually a random scream won't throw me off. If I go to an arcade I've never played at before or haven't played at for a long time, things like pad distance from the screen/position, noise pollution or other games/people, air circulation, machine volume, things in my peripheral vision can throw me off since my concentration isn't so great to begin with. Shadowing doesn't tend to throw me off, unless the person has REALLY, REALLY BAD PA, and I can really, really hear it (usually B's and C's on songs with a loud stomp can bring my PA down a bit, but it's usually trivial). Pad misses and boos also throw my PA off. Part of that is because I'm so spoiled when it comes to where I usually play DDR (MIT's game room is small, the pads are in perfect condition, the machine volume is very loud, and even when it's at its most crowded, it's still a great place to play).

Arrows. They really throw me off. Especially when they come fast and in large quantities. Man, I'd be so great at DDR if I only had to hit arrows when *I* felt like it.

Seriously, songs requiring a great deal of stamina throw me off. I can do any set of steps in small components, but not overall (e.g., I can pass the last run of LoM (starting from where you have to hit sets of (I think) 7 1/8 notes, to the full stream of 1/8 notes, and the ending jumps, but I can't pass the entire song for lack of stamina.). I don't blame loud sounds or other people for messing me up while playing--it certainly irritates me--, but I feel I should've had better concentration so that it doesn't throw me off.

When a song slows down or completely freezes. Like in max 300 and Ska a go go. I can never quite judge when the freeze is going to end, so i usually end up hitting the arrows to early or to late and usually break my full combo.

Those pissant little kids. I'm talking about the ones who are like 3-5 years old who just feel the need to run right in front of your legs or stick a foot on a pad your about to stomp. I swear, I feel like I'm going to kick the little bugger and send him flying. I really should just kick one of those kids about a yard. That should get'em learnin.

Maybe we should restrict this anything that throws you off excluding people, so it isn't the thread that -LoveRevenG- mentioned earlier.

As far as little kids climbing all over the machine, I just continue to play as normal. Eventually, entropy will strike, and that kid is going to get socked in the head. Parents nearby usually realize that I pay 0 attention points to what their kid is doing, so they quickly grab him/her/it before stitches are required. Only on 2 occasions have parents yelled at me for knocking little Jimmy over or something (the kids weren't even bleeding). My response is, "I can't afford to break my concentration while playing. But, as a parent, it's *YOUR* responsibility to watch your child, not mine. It's a good thing I'm not a car or busy intersection." The first time it happened, the parent, although angry, agreed with what I said, and just left. The second mother got extremely flustered, which led to a great deal of fun insulting her intelligence and her irresponsibility as a parent. Having a large and complex vocabulary is *great* for times like that. E15.gif

That sounds feasible to me, as most people know the typical horror stories of people interfering. Restricting it to a gameplay mechanics thread makes the most sense, in my mind.

for starters, most posts are about people annoying them... so that's what that sticky's for

and second... gameplay topics go on the gameplay forum
