Hi folks. While I enjoyed meeting some younger players at the Playland 3.0 Tournament in Hagerstown this last weekend, I'm wondering if there are any other old players on these boards. And by old I mean 30ish and up.

We can talk about our bursitis and Depends and stuff like that. Or about our grandkids.

Seriously, we can talk about DDR related and other stuff or just kind of meet one another as if we were mingling at an office party...

-Hey, great party.
-Yeah. Last year's wasn't nearly as nice.
-Yeah...
<awkward silence>
-So, what do you do?
-Oh, I stay at home with my kids, write, read a lot, try not to do too much housework.
- <laughs> That sounds, uh, interesting. I wish I could stay home.
-No, it's actually kind of boring. But I do do something kind of different - I play this fantastic video game Dance Dance Revolution.
- <looks confused> Dance Dance Revolution? What the heck is that?
-It's a great way to stay fit, but it's also a video game, so it's addicting. It's hard to not play it. You actually have to move your body while you're playing. It can get very strenuous. I'm actually working with a famous researcher on weight control to see if we can get some studies done on whether it can help kids lose weight.

You know, over 15% of children in the U.S. are clinically obese. And about 80% of households in the US have video game consoles. So kids are used to sitting in front of their TVs and playing video games. We're thinking that if we can introduce DDR into that equation, kids will get used to playing that instead of just sitting, and --

-<looks frantically to the side> Oops, sorry; I see someone I have to talk to - nice meeting you!

********************
Obviously that conversation would look much different if we both loved DDR.

Hope to talk to you soon -

I don't even know if I even fit into this category, even though I've been playing DDR back in April 1999, when I first saw the DDR 1.5 mix machine back in Cyberzone Arcade in Koreatown, Los Angeles, CA. I'm now 36 going on 37 and still playing these DDR/In The Groove music arcade video games. Is that a trip or what? Please reply, over! Thanks!

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You don't have to be a youngster to love DDR.

I've been playing for about 6 months and I'm up to getting Bs on 6 footers on Standard. I can only AA 4-footers, but I'm satisfied with that! I competed in the light/standard division of a tournament and got my a&* kicked (of course) but it was really fun.

I have a grown son and two little kids ages 9 and 7. My little ones play and are better than I am - they both get B's on 7 footers and usually play on heavy. We usually play at home but I like to go to the arcades while everyone else is in school or at work so I can have the machine to myself for 45 min and not be in front of a bunch of people.

I really am working on getting that research done, btw. There's other research going on, but the guy I'm working with is internationallly known. He's published over 60 articles on weight control and has written 6 books related to the subject. I really hope we can get some funding to start up some studies. But I try not to bore people too much with that! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

the chances of an adult playing ddr are slim... and the chances of an adult playing ddr and knowing about this forum and caring enough to post in this forum are really slim arent they?

What are you talking about? There are more adults on here than you know, all the mods are adults and more than half of them have accomplished great feats in the DDR community from freestyle to PA.

Exactly! I didn't start playing till I was 23. Now, 4 years later, I'm still addicted to DDR, visit these forums regularly since I joined, and have met some really cool folk here- some young, some older.
With that said, I've often wondered what kind of research has/is being done regarding DDR's effectiveness as a weight loss tool. Whether or not the calorie counter in the home versions is accurate, whether it's cardiovascular benefits compare to or possibly outweigh the benefits of traedmill running.

Try looking on the Mid-A forums. You might get a better response.

Well, there does seem to be some research going on already. Someone at Cal State is doing a study with college students, and I just heard that someone at WVA is doing research with overweight kids. So there is some out there. But I feel very strongly that if the guy I'm working with were to do it, the word would really get out pretty quickly to the media and the medical literature, and therefore to the people who could benefit.

But then we'll have to share DDR with the world! Sniff!

Problems with being old and playing DDR:

...bursitis acts up
...have to pick up kids from school in 5 minutes
...can't convince your kids to play with you in arcades so look like a perv because you're hanging around at a kid-oriented place
...fellow adults look at you funny when you explain how great the game is
...your children and their friends are hogging the metal pad at home
...no one knows the lyrics to the pop songs but you

feel free to add - these are just some examples

E19.gif You mean most of the old people around here are in the Mid-A? I don't know about that...

... can't find competition your own age.

... you think it's cute when you teach your little kid to play, but then a year later, he's AAing catas and beating the crap out of you.

... having people at work look at you and ask, "is it raining out?!" after you've snuck off to the arcade at lunchtime and worked up too much of a sweat.

... you're actually concerned that the jump runs in Drop Out are going to disturb your neighbors.

Some of the contributors are older than your stereotypical ddr player. I'm slightly younger than Syxx (both 24). I think he's got a couple months on me.

As for the thing about being looked at as a pervert: You tend to avoid that when you're hanging out at the arcade you're in charge of sweat.gif.

I'm 30 years old and I play at home and in the arcades. I have even got my co-workers into DDR (ages 32, 34, and 35).

I think it's funny to watch the reactions of younger folks in the arcades when I play. They think it is the most incredible thing that a person my age can play this game.

Here are some choice quotes:

"You are insane!"
"I thought only kids our age played this game!"
"Can I shake your hand?!?" (This has happened on more than one occasion)

Guess I ain't the only one. Actually I know a couple people my age and up who play and play pretty well. It is scary to see some of the kids you helped teach at 12 become so good it's scary. And for the Record, I'm 28 Years old. I've never triple A'd anything, though I may have double A'd a song or two on maniac. I can't beat sakura, but Rythm & Police Maniac Double is a standard for me.

I don't know about you all but I actually find freestyle much more rewarding than foot pounding. What do you guys think?

Dig back through the forums for the "you're too old for DDR" threads. You'll find there are plenty of people in the 30+ bracket (myself included).

Here are just a few of those threads...

So, it's evident that DDR and age will always be a revisited topic. E1.gif

Darn you, Sinistar, for posting all those interesting links! Now I've been goofing off for a half hour just reading the first three threads you linked to while I should be doing the laundry/dishes/bills/insert annoying chore here.

I think given all the old people I learned about from reading those links Sinistar posted we should have a group of old folks. Like the senior center for DDR players. Maybe one day we can get together a senior citizen’s tournament.

More problems with being old...

…embarrassing to ask for arcade tokens for Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa/Winter Solstice
