i was wondering if the calories counter in workout mode is correct for the ps2 versions of ddr. i told my dad it was but he refused to believe it.

I used to weigh like 285, yea 285 of fat lol, and i'd have my weight set to a little lower than that on the game. it said that i burned about 400-500 calories an hour. he said that it is awfully incorrect, but even though i was losing like 3 lbs a week he refused to believe that i was burnin that much from jus that game. he said i was lying and i was really on a diet or something like that. then he finally jus called me stupid E2.gif .

so can you guys tell if the game is correct or not?

The DDR calorie counter, like all calorie counters on mass market exercise equipment, isn't entirely representative of actual calories burned.

So, strictly speaking, your dad is probably right in that the calorie count is inaccurate, however he is wrong to think that you can't lose weight playing DDR. Plenty of people have.

Refer him to GetUpMove.com for a host of testimonials. And then there's my site for archives of news about DDR and exercise.

I would say its COMPLETELY inaccurate. You could be doing backflips on the arrows versus tapping them with your little toe and the machine wouldnt calculate the calories differently at all.

I have a feeling that the game assumes that you're neither doing backflips or tapping your toe, but rather stepping on the arrows as the game was designed to do. Now, some people will do steps differently and require different moves, some people will step harder than others, but I'd bet it's calculating based on the AVERAGE step.

I wouldn't say it's completely accurate, but I wouldn't say it isn't accurate at all. As mentioned, someone could be tapping his or her foot, or he or she could be doing back flips. But what would be the purpose of using workout mode, just for the counter, if you're planning on doing such? I think if you play just like you would in game mode, and use the calorie counter; it could be just accurate enough. It's all an approximate.

Just play arcade mode and you'll lose calories faster than playing on workout mode even though Arcade Mode doesn't tell you how many calories you lost. You could be playing on heavy MAX300 in workout mode and not even lose as many calories if you play MAX300 heavy in Arcade Mode.

Can someone tell me why when playing a song not all the arrows show up when you play workout mode? I think it would of been better if all the arrows did show up in workout mode.

#1) The calorie counter is woefully inaccurate. A unfit person would burn a lot more calories doing a light song than a fit ddr player would. Women burn at a different rate than men, and everyone's metabolism is just a bit different.

That being said:

2) You can loose weight through DDR. It's a good excise program because it's fun, easy, and convienent.

If you want an accurate calorie count, buy a heart rate monitor. It's a strap that goes around your chest, and there is a watch you wear, that tells you what you're burning based on your heartbeats. It's far more accurate because it knows how fast your heart is working doing certain things and can make a better accessment.

However - these things cost 80-100$ (or more), and personally, I think they itch, because they sit on your ribcage, tight enough that they can feel your pulse. I have one, I never use it because it annoys me too much.

I just make sure I do an hour of DDR a day, in arcade mode, and a strict calorie diet, and so far, been loosing weight.

If I am correct, workout mode automatically adds the modifier Little, so only the quarter note steps show up. You can take it off though.

You're right. You can change the option to normal gameplay on the Workout Mode screen, where you put in your weight, etc.
