The growth of exertainment

Jason Enos, Product Manager for Konami Digital Entertainment - America, takes his turn on Myturn to discuss the growing segment of "exertainment" and how it's helping keep kids active in an age where so many have become sedentary.

If you ask kids today to go out and run 2 miles everyday after school, I'm sure you would find some reluctance on their part. But if you had Dance Dance Revolution hooked up, they would line up to play the game, unaware that they got equal or more exercise playing the game vs. running the 2 miles. The fact that the game has such a compelling interface, exciting gameplay and addictive action—it's easy to forget you're getting a workout as you play the game. That's a very powerful message that has schools, doctors and researchers looking at Dance Dance Revolution as a solution to fighting issues like obesity and inactivity and renewing kids' interest in physical education and fitness.

That's the nail on the head. It gives an aspect to the exercise that makes it addictive and entertaining and there's barely a disadvantage involved. You're more likely to be dedicated to it too, as a typical DDR session for me is somewhere around 1.5 to 2 hours long.

E7.gif I have been playing DDR since the first game came out for the PSOne. I have a huge appetite, and people have wondered why I haven't gained any weight. My family members have asked me if I workout or do any form of excercise. I didn't realize that playing DDR was excercise! I mean I have so much fun playing that I don't realize how good it is for me. I have been playing for so long and it keeps me fit and I love it!

You people can do what you want. If DDR is what you need to get your lazy asses of the couch then so be it. I'll just continue running my 10 miles a day as usual. E7.gif

Remember when we would come home from school and immediately drop our bags to go outside and play with friends? We played well into the evening and always dreaded hearing our parents call us in for dinner, but once dinner was done, we were back outside playing and having fun until dusk. On occasion, we would skip going outside to play with toys or video games, but these other forms of entertainment could never compare or replace playing outside.

I couldn't agree more!!!! But I was one of those kids who played outside during the evening and gamed all night long. Danm I miss those days. E2.gif

How times have changed!!!
