Some V quick advice on metal dance mat modding required

I've got a bit of a problem.

The two metal dance mats I ordered BOTH show the same fault - in that they have just stopped working midsong. Unplugging the cable and reconnecting it and they got fixed. its these ones - http://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=98557

Now I am able to send them back for a full refund but I have to move fast if I am to do so. I could ask for a replacement but i waited nearly 3 months for the first 2 and have no confidence that the replacements will work either, plus it gets tricky then as to who pays for return postage if the replacements dont work either. Logic 3 wont send any spares for me to change parts - its either return it fully or dont.

Because of the way all 8 squares and the start/select stopped working on both I'm guessing its an electrical fault in the control box. Heres the question:

I am prepared to keep them and try to fix them myself (even if it means taking them apart and replacing the electronics with those butchered from a ps2 pad) but is this feasible?

It will of course invalidate my warranty so its a big choice and ive got to make the decision soon before 7 days pass from when they arrived (on tuesday). So what do people think? can i take it apart and fix it / replace parts?
