What OS is it running? The most important performance-improvement step is always to run the "msconfig" program, go to the Startup tab, and turn off everything unless you know for a 100% fact that you need to leave something running (which you won't, if you're only using this machine for Stepmania). If you're running Windows 95, NT4, or 2000, you won't have msconfig so you'd have to turn things by manually editing the registry, which is more complicated.
If you're running NT4, 2000 or XP, you should also run the "services.msc" program and set every service that's not absolutely required to Manual. If, after retstarting, there are still services running that you know for a fact you don't need, set them to Disabled, although be careful not to do that to any critical services that are required for bootup.
If you're not going to use this machine for anything else, it'd be wise to do a completely clean installation of Windows, and then install absolutely nothing else on the machine. You'll still want to use msconfig to disable all startup programs and services.msc to disable all unnecessary services even after doing a clean Windows install because even a clean install will start up a bunch of stuff that you don't need.
You should also try to hunt up some old RAM for free or cheap (salvage old, dead PCs for compatible memory or look through the stockpiles of geeky friends), since it can make quite a bit of difference.
You might also want to try Dance With Intensity instead of Stepmania, because I believe it's a bit less demanding of the hardware. |

DWI is basicaly the same as SM in the Lagmaster department if you dont have the video card and ram. That and its an inferior simulation of DDR, id use SM anyway, SM runs better on my p2 than DWI does, im assuming he has a p2, because of age, so that sounds about right. _________________

For you, maybe. DWI ran 10000000000 million times better than SM on my old P3. On the average, DWI is less resource-hungry and provides better performance on more computers than SM.

That's your opinion, not a fact. Many people prefer DWI over SM, including me. Not everyone enjoys a simulator that can't sort courses and has 500,000 superfluous options and fake mods.
Try both and decide which one you like better on your own. _________________

Your P3 probably had a decent video card. My laptop doesnt, DWI preforms worse on my laptop that SM does, if you can call SM preforming on my laptop preforming. Its a p3 1ghz too.
If you have the ram for it, SM will run better than DWI, hands down no contest, my p2 233 ran SM better than it ran DWI.
SM can sort courses, fool, you have to put the courses as you want them sorted into Folders. You cant change the sort, but you can sort them.

Actually my P3 had a lousy video card.

Well, lots of things would've run better on my old computer if I had tons of RAM, but I didn't. The whole point I'm trying to make is that DWI is more likely to run better on older computers that may not have tons of RAM.

It can't put the courses into folders on the nonstop select screen, though. You have to scroll through every single course you have to find the one you want. Thanks but no thanks, fool.
