They sell these dance pads at Fry's Electronics and www.outpost.com.

I got the Foam insert pad (3rd one down) and I think it works really well, except fot three things: 1.) The pad has 8 buttons on it, and since I have a size 14 foot and DDR Extreme can't have the buttons turn off, it makes it kind of hard to get AAs. 2.) The outer covering tears relatively easily, but it's nothing some duct tape can't fix. 3.) The O button is in the back corner of it instead of the top corner, so playing 6 panel gets really confusing.
I'm wondering if anyone else has any of these, and whether or not ROs and BNS' are better or worse than these (as I'm thinking about buying a new dance pad, and I know BNS' are cheaper than the $70 price tag on these)
Thanks! |

well the bottom one looks like a Red Octane minus officialness. I've heard bad things about all generic metal pads I've come across, the important things are,
1) no wood parts- from what I've heard, the wood bends and warps.
2) sheet metal on sheet metal contact system- copper on foil, foil on foil, other contact systems tear, break, and otherwise suck. Thin metal means extra foi, but it workd fairly well.
3)no accrylic arrows- Accryl suck for stomping. (period)
I'de spend the etra 60 on a RO if money is tigh, if not I'd go for the cobalt flux. CF never, ever, ever break and are the only pad on the market considered better than arcade quality. Red octanes work well and aren't a bad buy but I have a friend with both CF and RO, he never, ever, uses the RO unless 2 peps are playing at the same time.
So it's your money, spend it how you may but that's my advise. _________________

I've played on the first and second ones at a Fry's Electronics. I'm not positive, but I think they might be rebranded MyMyBox pads myself. Anyway, the 1st one is crap. Fry's had it taped to the floor, and that was about the only reason I was able to get semi-decent scores on anything because the pad would have been sliding all over the place otherwise. The 2nd one is quite a bit better. It, like DX/Ignition-style pads, has inserts under the arrows adding some much needed distinction between the arrows. Before Christmas, Fry's had the metal pad and the foam insert pad on their demo unit. I wanted to try them, but I never got a chance, and they're not there for now.
Some general things about the pads- I'm not a fan of the wonky button layout on them. I have no idea why they flipped the locations of O and Square. Also, I think they're rather pricy for what you get. The 2nd one costs $40. With another $5 you could get a DX/Ignition pad if you look around. And considering the problems you said you had with the 3rd one, it's overpriced in my opinion. |

Hey folks.
I don't play DDR, but my mother does. She owns the second pad on that list there, and she's only had the pad for about two and half months, and the foam inserts under the arrows have started sliding around. Apparently the actual sensors themselves aren't in the foam inserts, but the shifting of the bulk has caused various sensitivity issues. We haven't modded the pad or anything yet, but any modification will probably consist of cutting the thing open and rearranging/gluing the foam inserts. |

No more darn soft pad threads, If you are going to spend 30$ on a soft pad why the hell would buy a third party one? Buy an official pad and mod it, kthx. |

"If you are going to spend 30$ on a soft pad why the hell would buy a third party one?"
First of all konami pads are extremely hard to find, so gamestop pads, mad catz and even official "red octane ignitions" are all considered 3rd party.
Secondly, I agree, going on e-bay to get a normal "soft" pad is ridiculous as the shipping and handling eats up any savings you might get from buying a cheapo in the stores.
However, in the case of ignition pads, you can find some good ignition knockoffs on ebay, substitute the foam with real "red octane" foam and get a nice pad at a fraction of the cost.
My two third party ignition pads with real "red octane" foam purchased from the red octane website cost around $77 whereas a "real ignition" pad cost $110.00 each. So even with shipping and handling, I saved over $160 on the cost of two pads, and that, my friend is some real money.
And judging by many comments made about RO 2.0 issues with the xbox, not only did I save a ton of cash, but my pads seem to not have any of the issues the current RO 2.0 pads have with xbox. |

Same here, they're just MyMyBox pad's with a new name on them. Is money an issue to you? If it isn't, I suggest picking up a RO over anything there (crap, I had a MyMyBox and it was a PiecePieceCrap). Worth the money. By. Far.
Still, I've had over 15 pads until I got my CF a year ago and none has lasted as long or as well (I've gone from crappy pad to crappy pad until I settled on CF). _________________

I would'nt say that. Mad Catz and Gamestop I agree with about being considered 3rd party because making pads isnt their business. Their business is to make a cheap clone of anything having to do with video game accessories on the market whether it be driving wheels, joysticks, controllers, or pads. However, RedOctane is an official pad making company (as well as a couple other things such as bongo drums and arcade joysticks not to mention their deal with Roxor in helping to make the new ITG for PS2) who makes pretty good quality pads, making it not 3rd party. So, with all that said, quit with the put-downs with redoctane pads. They are decent as long as you take care of them and mod them if needed. I have had an RO Ignition 2.0 and it has lasted me 5 months so far with the only problem being a minor sticking of the down arrow. Before that I owned a cheap ebay deluxe pad and the down arrow quit functioning after about two weeks of owning it.
Edit: And that metal pad listed there looks like it will break down in about 3 weeks or less. _________________

It's still 3rd party, Konami is the only company that can make a 1st party pad. redoctane would be the 1st party manufactorer of ITG pads however. |
