Does anyone know if some pads need to be played on or wore in before they start working?

whatever the pad, it better be working right out of the box. If not, return it. If you mean "broke in" as in comfortable, it depends. I can say that my RO ignition took about a good solid hour of play to get comfy. It is a combination of breaking it in as well as getting yourself familiar with the feel of any given pad.

For other pads I can't comment.
