Soft Pad Modding - Un-Used Pad Necessary?

All of the mods I see for soft pads say that you need to use a brand new pad. Is that totally necessary? I just read through 90 pages on the soft pad post and couldnt find the issue addressed.

I am aware that there was a similar thread fairly recently... but the question wasn't really answered.

I would say no. I have modded 2, though I don't use them anymore. One was my brand new Konami pad, and the other was my friends well used Konami pad. We did both one day and both worked fine for quite awhile. Mine still works, though his has since died and been replaced with Ignition style pads.
