Must mod softpad BEFORE use?

I just got DDR yesterday and im doing mostly Light, some standard. What my question is is that im planning to mod my softpad within the next few days. I read somewhere that mods only work if you mod that softpad BEFORE you use it to play. Is this true cause i would say Ive played about 40-50 songs so far...

How long does the konami pad usually last without any such mods?

How long do any softpads last? They don't.

Besides, there's a thread for the Konami pads. Just start at the START HERE thread, and go through until you find the Konami pads.
