I've always wanted to know, just HOW exactly do you choose who gets to be a Maniac Member/Administrator? Is it that you guys are connected in some way (friends), or is it based on the contribution and posts that the person has made? I know about the contributor rank, but do they become mods. if they contribute ALOT to the site?

Behavior, contribution, and probably a good sense of judgement. That's probably the top three I can think of.

In my case, it had nothing to do with knowing the other mods (yes, the internet is lovely and all but when you live on the opposite side of the Atlantic to the rest of the mods, getting to know them when you're all trick-status and all that is difficult) We needed a mod for the UK forum, Spike came in and asked us who would be cool and I guess out of the people suggested the existing mods/admins just sort of whittled it down.

As it stands now, if we see that a particular forum (usually a regional forum rather than one of the more general ones) needs a moderator then any existing mods in that area will suggest candidates. If the rest agree that the person would be a good mod (yeah, usually citing things like behaviour, contribution, good sense, etcetcetc) then they get asked et voila.

And the best way to never be a mod is to ask to be a mod ^^

Every one can look around and find the members that are constantly contributing to the forum: those are the ones that (may) become moderators when the time comes. Moderators are just "good people".

For years I never wanted anything to do with being a moderator because it looked like more work dealing with the crappy side of the forums for no real thanx. Moderators aren't any different from the rest of the forum members* except for the fact they have to actually click the buttons when somebody breaks a rule. When SFK left I was hoping someone else would step up to keep things clean. When offered the position I accepted because I figured it would be a small way to pay-back J Dogg & friends for all the time and money they sunk into making this place what it is.

Since then I've met a few of the other moderators and become good friends with a couple. Niq was out here a little while ago for a little while ago and life was good.

* They're also better looking than the average member.

but doesn't it generally help to be chummy with a mod, so he/she can put in a good word for you?

I've been around for quite some time, and even though I did get to know some of the moderators personally, it never really helped me leap into the position. I just kinda kept my good attitude on the forums, and peopl etook notice. First I was a Vivid member for my work through the local arcade, did some event organizing and was recognized for that too. Then I took another step toward helping the site by becoming a Contributor. It wasn't until last October that I got the call to be a moderator. A lot of moderators knew who I was and had met me in person, but I don't think that alone got me into the spot.

Not really, no. I'm friends with Black Lab, but even those mods who weren't thought he'd make a good mod. I'm friends with other people, and becoming closer friends made me see how they wouldn't be a good mod. Not that they suck at life or something, just that they wouldn't be a good mod. They pretty much agree.

If you'd be a good candidate for a mod then chances are you'll get spotted whether you're a friend of some mod or not.

While I got to know a few of the mods and admins before actually becoming one (and meeting a bunch subsequently) I really can't say that it helped me any. I was asked to redo the stepcharts (I had previously done my own site which I will say was updated more than here) and then from there I just stuck around helping elsewhere, and boom I got to be a mod.

So basically, the mods. are chosen by the contributions and respect they have for the site? I personally wouldn't care either way if I got to be a mod or not, i'm fine where I am, but have you ever considered doning a monthly mod thing (kinda like mod of the month) where a trick member, contributor, or vivid member gets to be a mod for the day? Oh btw, are all the mods 18/21 and over?

We considered doing something like that to show people what it's like to really be a mod so they won't bitch all the time. Then we realized that the people who would benefit from that point would do more harm then good.

Cstarflare was 17, but I think he's either 18 or soon to be.

Indeed. I still don't even know if Black Lab is male/female/Carrot Top, but I voted for him/her to be modly.

Or, it could be in the case of a new forum. At the time I was heavily involved in DDR Simulators back sometime last year or so. I suggested a new forum for Simulators (as most of the other sites had at least a forum, if not an entire section dedicated to them). Once the vote for the forum pulled through, I was nominated to be moderator.

I've since then stepped down from DDR simulators because my interest in them has faded. And I wouldn't want to just take up an assignment I wouldn't be interested in doing.

I also have seen people here with a dark green foot and a rank of "Staff Member". Are they mods too?
