I've seen some DDR machines referred to as Namco cabinets. What is the difference between a Namco cabinet and a true DDR cabinet by Konami?

I'm especially interested in the difference in pad construction/playability. From images I've found they appear nearly identical, but I wonder if there's a significant difference in how they perform (ignoring obvious lack of maintenance).

Namco cabinets are generally lot worse quality and the pads seem to be horrible no matter what you do for them. You could read some experiences about Namco-cabinets from here: link

I vaguely remember hearing somewhere that the panels on Namco pads break easily.

Also, I recall having seen a picture of one that had wonky buttons. They were smaller and closer together.

The most significant thing about them though is that unless they've had something else put in them (i.e. ITG), they're running bootlegged versions of DDR EXTREME US. This game is bad to begin with, so playing it in an arcade with awful pads where you pay to play is just absurd. These also have a tendency to break for no reason. I actually remember hearing of one story where smoke began to come out of one of them.

Yes they do overheat. Our arcade had those crap-o-cabs with ITG2 back in 2005 and it was a pain in the butt. Now we have the dedicab ITG2 and it's way better.
