I want to know how you think you or your friends look when you play.

We all look a bit goofy hopping up and down on a metal pad, but who looks goofier? The player leaning forward with their hands held stiff (or sometimes flying) or the player leaning back on the metal bar?

Depends on the player. Some players keep their arms stiff, holding upwards or a little out to the sides. When their hips turn it looks like their arms are swinging a bit. Others flail around and look just plain silly. Some bar players look like they're in half-suspended animation while falling. Others look like they're just grabbing onto a bar to help stay still.

But enough about repeating what you said. I think players holding onto the bar look better, while players not holding on look silly.

This is all assuming the player is playing a song like Dead End or faster.

Definitely no-bar looks sillier. Holding the bar looks like you're serious and stabilizing yourself. No barring always ends up kinda looking like flailing, even if you're really good.

Players holding onto the bar look either physically deficient, lazy, or (if it's a song too hard for them) like they're hanging on for dear life. No-bar players look like they're on the verge of careening off the pad.

In other words, it's all bad.

And this thread is pretty close to a "bar debate" nono.gif

OH LOOK ANOTHER BAR DEBATE YAY

You'll look stupid no matter how you play. It's a fact. Hitting arrows on a metal pad will look stupid no matter how you do it.

Then, it is a good thing no one cares about how s/he looks nowadays E13.gif Now all we have to do is encourage people to play by reinforcing this and other facts, so they will not be afraid to try the game for whatever reason.

I actually thought the bar was neat although I use it only when I believe I cannot pass the song without it (I use speed modifiers rather sparingly -- like almost never on arcade machines).

Depends on the person and the play style I guess.
Overall, no barring is retarded... unless you're me. E1.gif

Ok, this isn't debating bar vs no bar, but rather, who in the world are you guys watching play DDR where they just look like they're flailing about? I've watched recordings of me playing DDR and I definitely don't look like Im flailing or that my arms are moving wildly. In fact, me, along with a lot of players, look rather fluid with their motions, especially when doing doubles play. Not all players are like this, obviously, but the really good players do look like they're moving fluidly, rather than flailing and twitch stomping.

A lot of good players can't play no bar, and flail all over the place.. unless they're heal-toeing.
Well, this is DDRfreak so I can't imagine people really flailing on DDR songs as much as ITG songs, but I guess it's possible.

I actually wasn't thinking of freestyle when I said that. laugh.gif Freestyling looks pretty cool to other DDR players and most onlookers, but some people will think you look like an epileptic retard no matter what. Then again, those people are probably the same people who make people on XBOX Live want to commit suicide by making nonstop fart jokes, jokes about genitalia, and talking about how TOTALLY AWSUM last night's episode of Family Guy/South Park was.

I am not a good player, but when I play Max 300 no bar it looks like I am dancing salsa, and I don't heel-toe. I tried Delirium no bar, I looked like I was mamboing.

I am trying to work on my doubles no-baring so I can Kobayan the pads.

I was not aware people actually cared what they look like when they are having fun with something laugh.gif

I try to incorporate actual dance moves into my DDRing, due to the added fun and challenge it gives me. I also freestyle quite a bit. The people who comment on both things think they look pretty cool, although I could quite frankly care less about how I look while playing. If I'm having fun, what's it matter? E1.gif

EDIT: Playing CHAOS and freezing all motion along with the arrows is fun as hell, I love doing that song E4.gif

What

But when I play DDR I don't use the bar unless it's a 10 footer and I never use the bar for doubles.

I weave in and out of bar use.

I look silly if I try to no-bar anything 10+, so I generally steer clear of it unless I know the steps really well.

Marathons, survivals, and oni courses I will no bar only because I think it actually looks cooler to do it that way.

Hmm, what else... I will try and no bar 16th streams as long as they are under 150bpm.

Sometimes I will make it an account to do 1x flat no bar just to show that I can do it... cause that's how we old skoolers roll.

Case in point: Look at Brilliant 2U Orchestra Groove Challenge. If done right, that song can look really cool no bar. Exotic ethnic can look epic if you can swivel your body right. Rhythm and Police also. Basically, I think getting two players to play without bar and do the song the same way (as in, same turns, pretty close PA capabilities) can look pretty epic to non-ddr players and ddr players alike. Now, watching someone bar something like FELM on doubles is epic also. I love watching player bar insane songs IF they do well on them. Watching anybody half-hazardly play any song, bar or not, is just boring.
