QFT. I saw that songlist spoiler, so I know what I'm getting into. And I got to hear the 'X edits' of the returning songs, they should've called them 'X Re-edit', that would've made more sense.
On that subject... I wonder what Butterfly's new charts look like. |
All the X-edit charts are basically inspired by the old charts with some things like freeze in it. _________________

Okay, I got Hottest Party 2 today and have been messing with it for a little while. While I can't say a "yay" or "nay" to the game just yet, there are a few things that stand out HUGE.
First off, probably the most disappointing thing in the game: the grade system has been affected by which icons are turned on. Meaning, if you turn off Hand Markers, you turn off AAAs. The highest you can get is a AA, even with all Perfects and Marvs.
Let me say this again, albiet in larger print, to further point out this atrocity:
NO HANDS = NO AAA
Luckily, and thankfully, gimmicks don't influence the score either way.
As a trade-off, hands are now slightly more involved. You have a separate "hand-combo" meter and combo counter right below your life bar. Every hand you hit makes your HC go up by one, and will give you bonus points to your score. The higher the combo, the higher the bonus. Missing a hand will take the combo back down to 0.
Also, you can make the HC meter go up faster by shaking the Remote or Nunchuk on every 1/4th beat. There are eight bars to the meter, and each shake makes it go up by one. Step on an arrow at the same time and the meter will go up by two. Filling the meter completely will boost your HC by one. Admittedly, the feature is pretty cool. But NOT at the expense of non-hand AAAs.
Mods are here now, too. Speed Mods (1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 8x) Turn Mods (Left, Right, Shuffle), Cut and Jump are represented. That's all that's new. The Hands, Freeze, and Gimmick options are still intact. As a bonus, the game SAVES pretty much all your set options now, excluding Hands, when you switch modes or turn off the game. Helpful stuff.
Groove Arena mode is Groove Master mode. Seriously. The only changes made are the fact that you're in a tower instead of a map, and you can switch between multiple arenas on the same tier. Other than that, same type of challenges and same unlock set-up.
The licence covers are mostly "meh", but with a few gems in there. Don't You Forget About Me, Can't Help Falling In Love, Come Rain or Shine, and (shockingly) You're The One That I Want are my favorites. (They actually took one of my LEAST favorite songs ever and made it likeable. Impressive.) Nowhere near the awesome level the HP1 covers were, sorry to say.
The KOs, without giving anything away, are awesome. And the awesome level keeps getting higher the further down the unlock list you go.
Oh yeah, there's courses now. You select them from the song wheel and go into the menu that way. The catch is that you don't know what songs are actually IN them until you play them. Courses range from between 3-5 songs.
Welp, back to the grind of X unlocking and HP stuff. And a little Rock Band 2 thrown in there for good measure.
And one more tidbit relating to DDRX before I go: anyone notice that screwing up on a freeze arrow now BREAKS your combo?
EDIT:

That's something I didn't know. Thanks for the clarification. You must understand I don't keep up with the AC scene as much as I used to. Life prevents me from spending the time, effort and money to have an arcade-centric lifestyle. My experience with SN2 AC would probably be ZILCH right now had I not found a couple during a trip to the beach this year. And the machines were falling apart as is. So having this option on a home mix is brand new to me.
And the same thanks to Reenee on the whole lives thing.
And, and, thanks to Wolfman Jake for that one post. If you didn't say anything, I was probably gonna. _________________

Also, damn you to whoever gave HP2 the good KOs and left X with SN2's good KOs and a bunch of original, okay ones. Good thing good KOs came in some form, but geez, spread them out a bit, will ya?
And the HP1 covers were hardly awesome. Call On Me, Unappreciated, and The Sign were the only good ones. The others ranged from boring to okay. I'm sure HP2's are a million times better (Have yet to get it, though...).
Desert Journey does NOT sound desert-y at all, but it sounds like a typical happy Taka song. Which is a good thing. _________________

For HP2, I so far like the song Silver Dream, by Jun, its supposed to be a 10, and a boss song. I don't have the game. yet, (I should have it by next week, I'm a little broke from getting X!), but I already saw some videos on YouTube. The game itself looks OK, but I cannot judge it until I actually play it. I am glad they added the speed mods, I don't know why they didnt for HP1. |

You can press + on the pad to reveal the songs. It was like that in HP1 as well.
I feel like a lot of the songs are mis-rated. Some of the 6s feel more like 7s, and some 7s feel more like 8s. Maybe that's just me. Overall the game feels a lot more difficult than the first one.
The "Makes Me Wonder" cover SUCKS. A lot. Call On Me has lots of 16ths in its Expert stepchart. Tootsee Roll is a lot harder than it sounds.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this already, but randomly during the Groove Arena mode, you'll be challenged to a song. Beating the challenger unlocks the song.
I can't stand the Dance n' Defend mode at all. The way it works is you build up the "Hand Combo" (either by hitting hand notes or shaking the remote/nunchuck) to the beat and then you press B to launch your attack. Depending on how big your Hand Combo was, you'll either send green or red blocks that cover up individual arrows, or you'll send a long block with a number on it that covers up all 4 arrows. Covered up arrows can't be used until the blocks are broken. The green and red blocks (which can accumulate) can be broken by stepping on the arrow or shaking the remote/nunchuck respectively. The long block can be broken by stepping on or shaking the number of times that the block reads.
My problem with the whole mode is that it's impossible for me to coordinate both stepping on/shaking to the arrows and breaking the blocks at the same time. Not only that, but the green and red blocks constantly flying up the screen is distracting and makes it hard to see the arrows. Maybe I just really suck at the mode, but I can't see myself playing it very often, if at all.
But otherwise, I really like the game. A definite improvement over the first.
EDIT: Oh, and the steps for Lesson 2 by DJ appear to try to teach crossovers, but...the characters don't actually do the crossovers.

I wonder if there'll be something like (2009 X-2 Edits) . Or if there will be more in the AC version. |
One of the biggest mysteries to me in DDR X AC is the advertised "Over 20 licenses"...We haven't had that many since DDR MAX AC! So I wonder what surprises Konami has in store. _________________

Over 20 badly-cut versions of old Dancemania licenses you used to adore? |

I can't hate a game with Maid Yuni in it.
But I can turn it off and play Disgaea 3.
Will we be getting game-only HP2 this time? I don't feel like paying twice the price for it, even if it is better than this (which wouldn't be hard; I think I've seen like three songs that I didn't instantly recognize from SN2 JP).
How to Make a Good US Mix:
Step 1: Extreme 2.
Step 2: Profit!
That's right, no mysterious middle step. Intelligent song edits, proper charts, and songs that don't blow can't be so hard as to never happen again, can it? Old KOs, new KOs, old licences, new licences... really, this doesn't seem difficult! It's called a mix...
Also, don't make it orange. And don't go on a quest to find the worst announcers in the entire Goddamn universe. Anyone ever play the original Pokémon Stadium? That guy is laughing at these guys.

haven't played much besides a bunch of missions still in street master mode but here are my thoughts:
GOOD:
I Like the new difficulty rating system. It's more accurate.
The game has a cool interface.
I like how you don't have to buy your songs after you unlock them
BAD:
Street Master mode is SO boring and slow!! All the missions are practically the same!
WAY too many crap license songs! Seriously, It's starting to get out of hand. what happened to games that were mostly konami originals or at least fairly good electronic dance music, not rock and pop!... but i guess I don't know the full songlist yet so I'll stop talking _________________

I beg to differ. You spin me round, 99 red balloons, hot stuff, clocks, blue monday, disco inferno, gypsy woman, and karma chameleon were all some of my favorites in DDR so far. |

I'll give you Karma Chameleon and Hot Stuff, but the others I didn't really care about. Hmm, guess I kinda forgot about those songs. I'm probably just talking out of extreme bitterness at how overrated it kinda was. The songs I originally liked (of which there were quite a few) were horribly covered, so I've been a bit angry at that mix.... The terrible/meh songs were excellently covered. Not because they were bad songs, they just seemed better done to me.
I didn't notice anything REALLY bad with the X-Edits, but the first transition in butterfly was a little odd. _________________

I'm glad I'm not crazy! I too started DDR way back. With the stellar 3rd, 5th, and 7th mixes, it's hard to enjoy Supernova, Supernova 2, and DDRX.
I just keep saying to myself WHY, Konami, WHY??? ? ???? But for the past three years DDR has totally changed its feel, not like it's a suprise that DDRX follows suit. |

I love how all these people were expecting a 4th mix style songlist from a US PS2 RELEASE
You guys should honestly be used to the fact that the US PS2 releases are more mainstream. Start importing the Japanese versions. _________________

Even if DDR is now more mainstream, it doesn't mean it has to have a sub-par song list when compared to much earlier mixes. o.O
Konami is to blame and no one else.
If someone really loves the recent DDR's, that's great. They might not know what DDR used to be; however. |
