Does anyone have any experience with the new 2008 1.7" Nexen pads? They mention that you can play w/o shoes, has anyone tried this? Also, do they all come with USB adapters or do I need to order a specific version?

OK, I know I'm going to sound like a noob ... but I am. I hope I'm posting this in the right place, since this is about Bluesharks.

I cannot have a metal pad. First, it's just too expensive, too heavy, I'm just starting out and it seems like overkill, I'm on the 3rd floor of an old house and my livingroom (where I play) is right over my roomie's livingroom (and she owns the house). I'm 53, I have arthritis in my knees and hips and yeah, I'm old. So having to "stomp" on the sensors to get them to register is a big problem.

So, the chances of me getting to even 7 footers is a huge maybe. In the meantime, I need a good pad. The one that came with SN2 is ok, but the back arrow is flaky already and so's the back on the ITG RO bundle pad (what is it about back arrows on pads?!). I weigh about 115 and need something sensitive, reliable, durable (as much as a pad can be), am not good with DIY stuff

I just saw this: http://store.mymybox.com/ddrmbsdx2.html

It's a BLUESHARK DELUXE DANCE PAD (PS2) - NEW 2008 Model - it's a soft pad with the dense foam. I can afford it, it sounds good on paper, but don't they all?

I know most of you are far beyond the soft pad, but I was wondering if anyone here has tried this, knows anyone who has and what you think of it.

Again, sorry if this is in the wrong place or ... whatever. Any advice is appreciated.

wait, your 53 and weight 115 pounds? holy crap

also, i've always loved the BNS DX sparkle and fusion pads, but i hear they've been quite flaky lately. I'd check out the thread and see peoples recent expereiences with the company, but their DX fusion and sparkle pads ROCK!

Hi jpop ... Yes I'm really 53 and I'm really about 115 (give or take a lb depending on whether I've had a severe chocolate attack) ... and I do have the arthritis to deal with along with something called meniere's disease. Part of why I'm doing DDR is exercise, fun, I love the music, and it's a balance challenge - with meniere's your balance is off almost all the time, so I'm trying to train myself to use my eyes and feet to help with the balance. Concussions are no fun!

I looked at the BNS DX - both colors (like the fusion better), but then I've read way too many posts here and a couple other forums that BNS is sending out craptastic pads from other companies that die in a week and aren't responding to complaints (like most companies).

I know mymybox does not have a great track record with CS. But that Blueshark Deluxe actually looks like a pad that could actually be *gasp* used without having to mod/jump through hoops/do major surgery on.

That's why I posted on this thread ... I'm doubtful any of you metal pad people have tried the Deluxe, but I thought I'd take a chance.

There are many foam pads. I'll post the alternatives worth mentioning so you can more easily compare and contrast.

RO Ignition 3 - Most popular, high price tag, and sometimes the raised plastic buttons slowly move out of place.
BNS Deluxe - Very reputable, cheaper than most, and the raised buttons are pretty soft. But like you said, they have recently been sending out the other pads. I am a victim.
DDR GAME Energy Series - Most expensive and same problem with migrating buttons (these panels are harder in comparison to the BNS). These are the ones BNS are sending out.
BlueShark Deluxe - The one you linked!

There are many more generic ones they sell on ebay or 3rd party sites NOT worth mentioning.

Here is a review that might help you (although it's a prototype pad): http://www.overclock.net/hardware/showproduct.php?product=681

I saw the review and it would describe the BlueShark Deluxe that I bought a week ago--my guess is they released this prototype sooner? I think it's pretty accurate but I also don't have much experience with DDR outside of arcades. Basically I just got the Deluxe because I go the Wii and DDR as a gift, and I wanted another pad besides the standard one that comes with it. Had trouble finding a good one that worked with the Wii and somehow I stumbled across this pad. This pad is definitely better than the Wii standard Konami pad.

First, the pad looks like it does in the picture--and I really like the color scheme. It comes with the foam which is in three interlocking pieces (and no instructions, btw). The foam is pretty thick and it's a little too big for the pad casing...becareful when you assemble it that you don't force it or it'll rip. Just get the zipper over the foam and zip it up slowly. Pad will look bent but once you step on it, it's fine.

I'm 130pds and still learning the Wii DDR where I'm at basic with most songs and difficult on a few. I play on carpeting, wearing socks, and haven't slipped or had the pad slip at the level I'm at right now. I find the buttons responsive.

I can't say yet about the durability of this pad. But I'm pretty happy with it so far.

I just wanted to say that I'm dissapointed with my Black Nexen pad from mymybox.com

They have awesome customer service, but the up arrow could never hold down freeze arrows, then I called them and they walked me through how to maintain it and everything went to hell from there..

jamiek! someone who has the soft "hard" blueshark pad! YAY biggrin.gif

Please let us know what you think of it, how it performs, whether it gives you padcrap or any other issues or if it's just great when you've used it for awhile. I know I'm really leaning toward that pad, even though I really really want a metal one - not happening.

CharLat ... mymybox is not the best, to put it mildly, at replying to problems. I was on their forum about a week ago? and someone posted that if you were having a problem with a product to call them (toll call of course).

When you say "everything went to hell from there" what happened?!

Well, the up arow was fixed, but then the right arrow started fgoing bad so I did the same thing except it actually got worse, then the left arrow's wire got cut when it started going bad and I tried to fix it again using the same instructions thet mtmtbox told me.

Now the arrows work only when they feel like it which is 95% of the time, but when they suddenly give out on you when you're in the middle of a great PA run, then you just want to break the thing into many pieces...lots of small pieces. devil.gif

CharLat, I know MMB has a bad reputation for being on the ball with CS, but how old is your Nexen?

Depending on the age, I'd be writing and demanding a replacement. There's no way you should be having to put up with so many kinds of problems.

Things break or malfunction or get messed up in shipping - we all know that no matter what you're buying. BUT in your case with the arrows working when they feel like it? Sounds like a major PITA and that MMB needs to step up and do the right thing by you and replace that malfunctioning pad.

If Jamiek's around, I'd love to hear how the blueshark you got is performing. I'm itching to get one of these (the soft hard pad) but would like to get a "working" review.

Maxx, I'll keep an eye out, if I see any announcements on vivazone or mymybox I'll give a shout here.

I got myself a mymybox BLUESHARK Deluxe Dance Pad (PS2) - New 2008 Model and have been using it for about a week. This is the dense foam pad. And this is my personal review and thoughts about it.

The pad and inserts come in the carrying bag and that's packed inside a plain box. The carry bag is that weird paper fabric type of stuff and has a double zipper with attached zipper pull. I don't think it would hold up to alot of use. And you'd have to take the pad apart to be able to put it in the bag.

Putting the pad inserts in - yes, it is hard to get the inserts in and get it zipped up because the foam is a smidge bigger than the pad. How I got it in and zipped was - I didn't put the foam together first. I laid the pad out open on a flat surface (the hardwood floor). I put the first (top) piece in, got that snugged as close as possible to the controller, then put the second and third piece in. Zipping it up, take your time, zip a little, then check the zipper as you go, as it wants to almost fold in on itself, especially the top, so you need to straighten the zipper out bit by bit. I did not have any rips or tears when I got done.

The pad is heavier than my Vortz ignition "knockoff" of course.

The raised arrows. I personally don't feel like they're really "raised" so much as there's an almost "pebbly" feel where the arrows are and if you look at the pad on a slight angle you can see the curve of the inserts at the base of each arrow.

For me, the pad barely moves, even when I'm being a flailing spaz. I have fallen off the pad a few times, but that's me. Note I'm not a heavy player.

I'm just really getting into basic (been playing for just a little over a month now), with the exception of a few Are You Kidding?! songs. I have seen an improvement in scoring. I'm not getting as many "almost" "boo" or even "great" in general. The downside to this accuracy is, at least for me, I have to really "Stomp" and I'm finding myself having to flatfoot to get the pad to register decent marks. I really think this is a combination of my weight, knee problems (arthritis and Rknee surgery for a torn medial meniscus - it's never been quite the same) and I'm an ex-dancer, so I'm used to stepping lighter and on the balls of my feet.

However, on the Blueshark I have gotten my first AAAs! On either beginner or basic, but still ...

Now, I don't unfortunately have arcade machine experience or even home metal pad experience to compare this to. I can compare it to my flat pads and the ignition knock-off.

No comparison to flat pads obviously.

The ignition knock-off uses the 6 piece foam insert, it's not as dense, though it's thick and hard enough that I never feel like I'm sinking, it actually has more of a raised arrow feel to me. It's just not as accurate, which gets frustrating, obviously. Could be the sensors, could be the foam needs to be a little denser or thicker, could be that I only paid $30 and you get what you pay for! And there is the fact that the Blueshark uses only 3 "puzzle pieces" of foam, while most others use 6 - I really don't see the Blueshark foam ever separating. My knockoff using 6 pieces? if I store it standing on its side, it will start to separate. Not so with the Blueshark. Like, at all!

It's a well made pad, the bottom material really doesn't want to go anywhere. The foam I think (hope) will take a long time to start to break down or compress - it really IS dense.

If you're looking for a dense foam pad, have the $70 + s/h (comes to something like $85 - and I guess tax if you're in their state?) and are maybe a little heavier than me (I'm 115), don't have knee/leg problems and/or normally step heavy, I think this would be a great compromise going from, say, a flat pad but not ready for the investment in a metal pad. And no maintenance!

and that's it!
