My Game Spot soft pad ($15) has gotten me more ***'s than any arcade pad. I have a friend who consistently AAA's and can even **** 8-9's on it.
You don't need metal pads, you need technique. So for any noobs who think a metal pad helps, get your head checked. I have owned this pad for nearly 3 years and it has never failed me once. I've passed plenty of 12's on it including Flower Forever (v2) and Delerium (around 92% on both, 1x, Both were no bar, mind you). It's all about being more conscious about how you step. You need to be more ginger and careful not to scoot the damn mat whenever you hit a 16th run, or any note for that matter. Learn to step on the balls of toes, not the toes themselves. Not the heel either. Not the "flat foot" either. (This technique does not apply to arcade play, which is why you shouldn't play at home if you're playing for score in the first place.) The control will improve your game. Control imposed upon how you step will drastically improve your accuracy. If you can't do that, go back to playing Kingdom Hearts or whatever you folks play these days.
If you guys wanna get better, realize it's not the equipment but your own mental blocks that are preventing you. Telling yourself that you need a better pad will help you "wait to get better" not "improve now and start doing better".
If you really wanna be at a competitive level you shouldn't even be playing at home, so that's not even an excuse to get a metal pad. You can NEVER, EVER recreate the arcade experience at home no matter how hard you try.
May I also note that I only play casually. I have not played seriously in at least 2 years. Do not tell me my scores suck, I know they do. Instead analyze your own play and improve your own crappy game.
This board is depressing. _________________

Face it: this post is pure flamebait and bullshit to boot.
YOU != everybody. Who are you to make yourself the authority on something, and to tell people something is the case when it very well isn't the only case.
Things are not in absolutes, in fact, I am now at a level where transition is almost seamless and I do as good if not BETTER than in home versions.
To say it only hurts, or to imply it is pompus, ignorant, and false in my opinion.
Again, this post is only flamebait, and I will treat it personally as such.
For fun, llet's see how we CAN come close, if not closer:
-2 bluesharks, SM3.95 + arcade theme rip, ITG1 and 2 songs, noteskins, and BGvids for ITG2
-2 bluesharks and MAME (once sound emulation works, 3rd mix - EXTREME = wn! )
-Hacking console versions (for timing, making it more like if not extremely close to the arcade timing) _________________

I also suppose you'd also like us to avoid all speed and color mods (even though they are put there to help players) so that we'd have to struggle to reach harder difficulties rather than use the assistance that is given, since it's just a mental block anyway.
What has prevented me from getting better in the past:
1) Couldn't hear my steps to the beat.
2) Drained stamina from soft footing.
3) Pad moved from sliding.
4) Soft carpet had pad arrows at various heights.
I'm glad a metal pad solved all these problems for me. Transitioning from a soft pad to arcade is a very different experience than transitioning from a metal pad. Better tools do help the end result, and if the tools are there, use them. |

i found that cobalt fluxes actually made me play worse at arcades, so i sold mine and now i only play at home when i have friends over. i personally dont think playing at home is worth it if you have a decent arcade less than 10 minutes away. Paying $5 a week>paying $300 for a decent metal pad and having to tool around with it when it stops working right. |

Yeah, I suppose if I had a decent arcade that close to me, I wouldn't bother with getting a new metal pad... but since the nearest *decent* arcade is over a half an hour away from me, and the nearest *arcade* is at least a 25 minute drive... I think I'm excused.
Cobalt Fluxes are flat like soft pads, by the way (unless you get the arcade mod), and -super- responsive, while the average arcade pad is not. So if you're worse at the arcade after practicing on one, those could be reasons why.
EDIT:
Oh, by the way:

my cobalt flux was arcade modded and it failed to feel anything like the arcade. Why? because arcade pads arent a big piece of play wood with sheet metal screwed into them. I could go on about how annoying fixing the thing was(the screw holes got stripped SOOO easily) and how it felt like stepping on concrete everytime i played. yeah, it worked fine, but really wasn't "arcade accurate" or gave me the boost in scores i expected it to. ive never played on a metal pad thats not arcade that i liked or felt was noticably better than my $80 BNS DX sparkle, and the only thing i think could ever change my mind is a working blueshark, but clearly mymybox blows a big one at speaking english and customer service....so i dont feel like risking $400. |

MMB's customer service is getting a lot better. I think eventually my club will rely on them for PumP and DDR pads, given how downright awsom the Bluesharks hae shown themselves to be, and how slick the new PumP pads look.
Now we just have to raise the money.

Even if all softpads performed like that we'd still buy metal pads. Why? For the arcade feel and ability to use shoes while playing. _________________

That explains why we use soft pads at the arcade. |
