I have a slightly modified DDR pad. It's the basic soft pad by konami that i duct taped to a big 3/4 inch piece of wood. It was working great but finally it's starting to misfire. I hit the right or left arrow and the top twitches, or when i hit the top and release it tends to hit again (making missed arrows for any up arrow more than one). THe down arrow also does the same, and sometimes the other arrows.
Now, i'm poor. I'm still a novice, i can only do like 4 to 5 steps on both DDR Max and DDR Extreme 2, so i don't want to spend a fortune getting either a manufactured DDR metal pad, nor make my own metal pad (yet)
I opened up my pad, and find that the plastic with the sensors is wrinkled, and the small foam layer between the sensors is extremely stretched out, and wrinkly.
So, here are my questions for guidance.
Would it be worth it to just get a new Konomi dance soft pad, and better duct tape it and mod it (before i modified it, i played a while with it alone, meaning a lot of sliding, stretching, and folding. This was before i knew any better)?
Or since the foam will go out fast anyways, should i follow the modification guide here (http://www.math.wisc.edu/~holden/videogames/ddr/pad%20mod%20guide/pad%20mod%20guide.html) and make new thicker high density foam barriers for my sensors and then duct tape it all back together?
Or, should I invest in the thick foam pads, and just slide some wood into the foam insert area under the foam? (I really don't mind the hard surface, my feet can take it, but if the longevity of the thicker ones is more)
Thanks a lot for the advice! _________________

At your point, it'd probably be best to buy an Ignition foam softpad. I don't think you're quite ready to have a metal pad (though it wouldn't hurt), but as far as softpads go, the Ignitions are the best. The link for it is here. I wouldn't recommend putting a wood insert instead of the foam. The foam makes a great surface for playing.
For future reference, this should go in the Bemani Controllers forum. =] _________________

Thanks. The ignition is still a bit pricey, i got another 2 Konomi soft pads (same as i had before) for a total of 20 bucks after shipping. I'll keep one safe and mod the first one via duct tape and flattening and making sure it's tight. Hopefully by the time both die out, i'll be able to either make my own or purchase a metal one. I am still improving, also got Step Mania for my laptop :-P I want to get the PS2 to USB adapter so i can play the songs that are on step mania too. Thanks again! _________________
