To the best of my recollection, NAOKI has stated that he creates some songs entirely with the steps in mind (i.e. MAX 300), which suggests he has at least some understand of the game. Most people who've never played just see walls of arrows and can't really appreciate the true difficulty of things. Plus, when a large portion of your life involves hanging around the BEMANI HQ of the world, I'm sure it's pretty unavoidable; you'll wind up playing them all in some capacity.
