I don't think HDV has a terrible step chart...only on challenge. The expert chart is actually really fun to play.
Back on topic, both are important, because I tend to play the songs that I like and have good charts, and ignore the rest. But if I really had to choose, probably stepchart. Although I have to say, a good song can entice me to play it, while a good stepchart probably won't.
Here's a theory: beginning/casual players care more about the song, and those who play mostly 9s and 10s care more about the steps. If the song was more important, everyone would love FAXX and hate Max 300...but that's not really the case. |

It kinda goes both ways for me.
I'll play a song I love even if it has a bad chart, but I'll also play I song I dislike if it has a fun chart.

I really don't know why people hate Paula Terry so much. |

I know you weren't saying you didn't like her .
I just think half the people that hate Drivin', hate it because of her . |

I used to think the same thing. Listen to it on a really good sound system...it's got a lot more going for it than you might think.

Just taking a stab in the dark here, but it might have something to do with the fact that she absolutely sucks at singing.
To answer the OP's question, I'm gonna go against the popular opinion here and state that the chart is far more important to me than the song. I don't listen to j-pop or eurobeat in my spare time, so not much of DDR's music is really stuff that I "like" per se. Therefore, the chart is still going to be the main factor in whether or not I enjoy a song.
If a chart follows the music well, I can enjoy playing a bad song (i.e.: The Reflex, Little Boy, Secret Rendezvous). There are some charts that I think are exceptional to the point where even though I like the song, the chart still outshines it (i.e.: HVAM, Leading Cyber, La Senorita Virtual).
</my 2 cents>

It depends on the song. But more often then not I pick the song from its music. _________________

I like that song too, and I don't see how his signature has anything to do with the topic question. lol noobz.
I pick the stepchart. I don't really pay attention to the aspects of the music when I play, but I pay closer attention to how the stepchart is, and I only listen to get the beat of the song. Listening to the music in the dancing game perspective is alot different than just normally listening to music. (well, for me anyway.) |

Dive... DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAIVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE~~!!~!!!!!!
I love you anyways, Paula.
I agree with everything else. Song first, but a great chart will get me to play a crappy song. However, I'm lazy when it comes to editing and sometimes I just can't be bothered to edit a great song with a bad chart, so I come here and complain about it. _________________

I care more about the steps nowadays because I want to be able to enjoy the chart or reliably score on it, and it can easily make up for an okay/bad song more than a good song makes up for mediocre steps that frustrate me into not enjoying the package. _________________

Unless I'm playing a song just to whore-for-score, it's gotta be both. There are too many songs to choose from to bother with those where you don't like the steps or don't like the song. _________________

If it's a song I like, but it's too easy (i.e Only You, Morning Glory, Peace, Baby's Tears, etc.), then I don't play them much due to them being too easy. I hate it when they take a song I like, then make it a 6 or easy 7...... |
