I have my own opinions about this, but I thought it might be worth discussing. What do you guys think? Is there any relation between DDR and dancing? Does having one skill help to learn the other?

I've found that DDR greatly improves coordination and rhythm, which are needed in dancing. And I have seen dancers that incorporate their skills by actually dancing on the pad (breaking, crumping, etc.). But other than this I don't think you can become a much better dancer by stamping on plastic buttons.

DDR is nothing at all like dancing.

The name is a bit of a dead end.

Reminds me of the episode of South Park where Stan is putting together a dance team, and gets the DDR kid to join the troupe.

It just doesn't work. laugh.gif

It's basically like playing Guitar Hero/Guitar Freaks to learn guitar.

I believe that there is a little realism, but not much at all. Some songs look like real dancing IMO. The two that come to mind is Do Me (H.I.G.E.O mix) (Light/Basic) and Superstar on Heavy (especially that middle part 140+ combo in.

On the other hand, is Drop Out or TLoM dancing. I don't think so! laugh.gif

The only corelation between DDR and dancing is the fact that DDR is a music based game. The whole rhythm/beat aspect comes into play, of course, when actually dancing, and is present in DDR. But the whole premise of DDR has nothing to do with dancing. It's arrow mashing, and nothing more.

Actually, if it were arrow mashing, we'd be having a harder time playing on an in-tact machine. laugh.gif

There's actually a Spider Stompin' machine in my arcade. Is it a bad thing that I've come close to playing it with my reasoning being "I'm good at DDR, this is practically the same thing!"?

IMO I look at DDR as a excerise game. However if you play some songs on double light at around 120 BPM and below, it feels like you can do some dancing/freestyle. Sometimes I do that when I'm play PIU double on certain songs.

Because they speak Engrish. It's always like that, HAPPY LOVE LOVE, or like SUPARU FUN TIME! English isn't their native language. People name stuff they think sounds cool in another language. That and "DDR" rolls of the tounge really easy. Really the European name Dancing Stage is a lot more fitting.

Yes. You should have had wild sex with it by now.

Yes, but only because we are used to the name having 2 Dance's in it. If it were Dance Revolution from the start, it would be completely normal.

I'm pretty sure it's "Dance Dance Revolution" because in Japanese, when you use two words sequentially it adds emphasis, or something along those lines. In fact, I remember someone mentioning that there's a kanji that just means "repeat what you just said". So it's kinda like....it isn't just a dancing revolution, it's Dance Dance Revolution!

You know.

Basically.

Find that.

It probably isn't 再, but I want to know. (I wasn't going to bump this, even at a 5-day mark, but I'm curious now.)

And the whole Japanese thing; contorting English to make it semi-catchy is their forte. Sort of. Redundancy (see "Puyo Puyo Fever") isn't unprecedented, but I can't say it's very common, either.

And actually about the dancing thing; I contribute some of my mediocre-to-presentable dancing ability (OH MAN I'M BEING COCKY SOMEONE SHOOT ME) to freestyle and learning from the southeast regional greats of the time (when I was in high school). some

Yeah, it give you the rhythm for sure, but no moves... Try to knee drop on dynamite rave, nope... that cordination is not there unless you've had some practice.

PIU on the other hand does have some nice dance aspect to it, arrow hitting yeah, but its much more versatile when you can actually dance. Easier to dance on PIU I say. Look at the freestyle videos.

DDR, well... I tried to dance on it, but it doesn't allow for lots of moves, since most dance moves do not solely use the cardinal directions. The arrow is faced so foward and backward, that its not a natural movement stepping up and back. I have to say DDR is more for the stepping aspect of rhythm gaming, plus the stepcharts seem to follow the melody... not really the break in the beat too much. It says a lot when it cost twice as much for doubles.
