I am about to begin building a homepad and was wondering how I would have it be USB instead of run through a PS2 controller.

just make it plug into a normal metal pad control box, and then you can get a control box with the usb adapter on it, it's that simple E1.gif

Not the Trio Linker Plus (or at least my Trio Linker Plus). I've used it to use my IIDX controller to play SM before, and the lag was out sick or something. Besides, with Trio Linker Pluses you can also connect Dreamcast controllers and Gamecube controllers, which is pretty cool when you're playing ROMs.

Get one of those standalone num pads, and use that.

Something like this, but try to find it cheaper. $35 for a num pad = not worth it. (you could get a whole friggin' keyboard for $10)

Or, take the buttons off the num pad on your keyboard, solder the wires from the pad to the contacts under the buttons, and then you have a fully functional keyboard with attached DDR pad.

EDIT:
Here
You can just cut the keypad part off, stuff it in your breasts, and then use the chip for your pad. Every chip has somewhere you can solder. If you don't know how to solder, just get a soldering iron, some cheap solder, and a bunch of scrap wires, and play around. It's pretty easy to learn.
