One thing I like about InTheGroove which DDR doesn't have (to my knowledge) is unlock codes the player can enter to completely unlock everything. I don't know about anyone else but I'd rather not have to play the game X amount of times or play X amount of songs/etc before I'm allowed to play certain songs.

Having unlock codes lets you enter them to avoid that and if you'd rather play through to get it all unlocked, you could do that instead. The question is why would you want to do that when the unlocks are not skill-based but are, instead, based on how long you've played or how many songs you played?

Meh, I'd rather have all songs open to me anyway. Give out virtual trophies or something for the skill-based stuff or something.

To my knowledge, one of the only arcade mixes that don't have unlocks yet is SuperNOVA. Home versions are a different story though.

Maybe so. Still, doesn't an operator have to set the codes in the DDR arcade game machines though? With the InTheGroove arcade machine, I remember seeing some codes for each unlockable song that a regular player could enter if that machine didn't have that song.

Either way, I hate having stuff locked. And by "stuff" I mean songs. I could care less about other locked stuff (courses, etc...). I'm not saying the other stuff isn't important, but it is less important than having each song individually unlocked.

Well remember that Extreme is pretty old compared to ITG, so expect some features to be outdated.

I like how ITG PS2 has an unlock code. Saves me the trouble of downloading a fully unlocked save.

Well see, exactly! Plus you need extra equipment to transfer such a save to your PS2 memory card. A built-in unlock costs you nothing except a few seconds of time to input it.

I don't really see the point in keeping songs locked up anyway. I see the point in rewarding players for skill. I don't see the point in keeping back songs.

Things suitable to be unlocked by skill, IMO, include characters/costumes, trophies, extra backgrounds, mods, and those sorts of things, but not songs.

There are other advantages too. If your save gets messed up, all you have to do is delete it and input the unlock code again. It's also handy if you take the game over to someone else's house. You can just use their memory card and unlock everything in a few seconds.

I would love it if Konami used unlock codes in their PS2 games. I don't really care for the long, convoluted systems of missions they came up with for Extreme 2 and SN. They could at least throw in an unlock code as an alternative for those of us who actually want to just play the songs.

Konami has used such a code, though only once (enter Konami code in UM1).

If you didn't have to unlock songs, what would be the point playing Mission Mode, anyway? Sure, there should be an alternative, but at least give the player something to work towards.

I played through all of Extreme US's mission mode because it was fun, not because I had to. Having the mission mode separate from the main unlock system is the best combination because the people who like missions will play them anyway and the people who don't like them won't have to play them.

The point of playing mission mode anyway would be if you wanted to play it for fun or if you are somewhat perfectionist (which I imagine many dance gamers are) and want to complete it all for the sake of completeness or a challenge. It shouldn't bar you from playing other parts of the game you want to play until you do that.

Think of it this way. If the mission mode is forced on you and you don't want to play it, it's a chore. You like the game less. If the mission mode isn't forced on you but you choose to play it or not, if you like it it's fun. If you don't, then you don't play it.

Plus if there's an unlock code, you choose to use that or not so if you'd rather unlock songs through mission mode, then don't use the unlock code. But it gives others a chance to play the songs earlier (or at a friend's house or if your memory card bails on you, as AA Bob said).

Edit------

Plus a good deal of this dealt with timed-unlocks as well, where the only way to unlock is by playing so many songs or by putting in so much play time/etc. What is the point in that?

What are you talking about? IIRC, all of the Ultramix games have used them!

I like the sense of surprize and replay value that unlockable content brings, so long as it doesn't force certain gameplay upon you, and a fair amount of the addictively-good stuff is available from the get-go.

Though I do agree, there should be some method of instant-availability, in case of lost/corrupted gamesaves, and something at the end of it all (or even a halfway point like that) that reveals that process.

I'm pretty sure the Konami code only works in UM1.

yes, however all the ultramix games have different codes.

um1 had the konami code on the player 4 controller durring the credits.

um2 had you get a certain score on the credits mini game.

um3 had you hit the opposite notes in the credits mini game untill you heard a confirmed sound.

um4 had you highlight the modes in a certain order.

just because it isnt the konami code doesnt mean it isnt there *points at how to unlock memories in extreme US*

so play the fun songs as well... or am i the only person left who can pass HDVoni but enjoys 7s? seriously, move your feet owns every other song in extreme US, with simply being loved at a close second. play them some time, extreme US is better than people give it credit for. also, it has on the jazz. instant win.

It also has no way to turn off the controller buttons. Non-metal pads (and even some metal pads) = death.

QFE, if there is one thing I will give Extreme US credit for, it would be for having a very good songlist.
