Ok, this is the best example I could think of. Last year in may the best song I can do was Butterfly Upswing on light. When I played it in front of class when I brought it in for everyone to play to show them how the game works, they were in shock and awe practically.
It all depends on the audience; if they are totally new to the concept of DDR and how it's played, then seeing something as feeble as that would seem amazing to a person at first. Then later on when they see stuff like FELMO and PSMO that the reaction gets a bit stricter. _________________

People new to DDR won't understand speed changes and speed mods either. Fail. _________________

This kind of leads back to 'what songs should i play to attract an audience at the arcade.' Certain songs are visually more impressive to watch someone play than others, and difficulty is not necessarily a factor.
Drop Out is very impressive to see, whether or not you're familiar with DDR, because of the jumps and the run at the end. It's a very easy song comparatively.
Cartoon Heroes, while much more difficult (in my opinion at least) is nowhere near as impressive to watch if you're not very well acquainted with the game, since its difficulty stems from more complex rhythm and step patterns rather than straight speed or crazy air.
And that's not necessarily true, RCBF. About a year and a half ago, I was at an arcade watching some guy play, and I thought he was monstrously good.. which back then, considering I was doing the judging, didn't mean anything, he was probably just pretty ok. He played on 2x, and a lot of people who didn't play DDR and who didn't know anything about DDR were like 'wow, he just selected an option called 2x speed, thats crazy' or they'd ask him questions like 'wow, how do you see the notes? they're moving so fast!!' etc.
Anyone open-minded enough to appreciate the effort will be impressed by even moderately difficult stuff. _________________

It got serious in here REALLY quick.
Well, I think doing DDR in a talent show is different and creative but some closed-minded people may frown upon it. DDR takes a lot of practice and hand-feet coordination, so I think it's considered a talent, though people still will reprimend you for doing it.
Quote: | i bet about 90% of the people there would either boo you off or make fun of you later. basically don't make a fool out of yourself at a talent show when you're not going to win. |
Didn't someone just say the guy who did DDR WON?
And someone (i don't remember who) said that doing DDR in a talent show is similar to doing Halo 2 in a talent show as well. And I have to disagree. Just because their both Video Games doesn't mean people will look at it in the same way. No one can grasp the concept of shooting each other, and no one wants to watch that. People do however dance, everyone likes to dance. If people didn't like to watch DDR, then why is it that an audience forms everytime I do Paranoia Max??? |

He didn't make it yet, but he still has another chance. _________________

Yeah, he did, although I don't know the kid personally.
And seriously, CartoonHero, if 90% of the population would boo you off the stage, then why was 95% of my school cheering with amazement when I FC'd HVAM, something that any decent DDR player can do, and most could do with a lot more skill than me?
It's because of a few things:
1. Nobody there could see themselves playing that song in a million years.
2. The combo number, which, on the 72" flatscreen TV, was visible from the parking lot, was increasing at a rate of 5/sec. They saw that number pulse and increase by one or two every 1/5 of a second, and they knew that every number on there represented me stepping once. They didn't understand the game, but they knew what was happening.
3. I made every step audible throughout the entire room, and they could feel the rhythmic accuracy of each step I did. They felt me stomping to a beat that they all saw as extremely fast.
4. Where they saw blurs, I saw arrows. Their untrained vision couldn't follow the same arrows that seemed almost slow to me. What they knew was that I responded to everyone correctly.
5. I stomped about 3 times as loud on the step right before the sudden stop near the end, and this successfully made almost everyone watching jump.
The reason why DDR works well at talent shows is because it's something that everyone knows, but few play at a serious level. Maybe it's the geography, but I know that in Portland, if you play DDR well, you're basically revered. Again, give me something other than your personal opinion and I'll give a damn. Arguing actual events with extremist personal opinions is stupid. I'm not saying I don't see where you're coming from; I have even said that I think much more of a real dancer than a DDR player, but that doesn't change what everyone else thinks.
Also, after my little event, someone did go up to me and say "DDR is gay!"
He was immediately subdued by about 4 people I didn't even know who would have totally beat the crap out of him if I had let them.
So no, you're not going to be looked down upon for playing DDR, even if you're in a community where being gay can get you beaten to death.
My suggestion to you is to go out and try it. You're a fairly decent DDR player, aren't you? Why don't you test your theory out on the field? If they boo you off the stage, you've got a good, strong argument here. If they respond to you the same way they respond to me, then you'll be the most popular guy in town. It's pretty win-win. _________________

Really brave or really stupid? I'd like to say a little of both to be honest. But yeah in about 25 mins. I'll know if I made it or not. And since when is DDR NOT a talent. You have to move pretty good for some stuff. _________________
