Hi everyone. I'm writing an English term paper in which we were allowed to choose our topic, and I chose to write about DDR. One thing I am doing is making a survey and then writing a paper on the results. Please answer the questions below honestly and fully, and either post them here or send them to [email protected] Thank you for your time!

1. Do you play DDR for exercise or for fun?

2. How often do you play DDR per week? (An estimate)

3. Do you play at the arcade or at home? (If both, also include which one you play more at)

4. How did you get involved in DDR?

5. Rank the following from 1-5, 1 being the most important and 5 being the least, of what is most important in a DDR game.

- Quality of songs
- Difficulty and variety of levels
- Number and quality of modes
- Characters
- A good dance mat / pad

6. Do you wear shoes, socks, or nothing on your feet while playing DDR?

7. Have you tried other DDR-like games? (example: StepMania)

8. Have you lost weight from playing DDR? If so, how many pounds?

9. Are you male or female?

10. Are you:

-Between 5 and 14 years old
-Between 15 and 24 years old
-Between 25 and 30 years old
-Between 31 and 35 years old
-36 or older

11. Please include any additional comments about DDR.

Either post your answers here or send them to [email protected] Thank you for your time!

1. Do you play DDR for exercise or for fun?
For fun! Although the cardiovascular workout I get is a nice side-effect.

2. How often do you play DDR per week? (An estimate)
Between four to seven hours, I'd guess - depending on how busy the rest of my life is. (it may not even hit four this week)

3. Do you play at the arcade or at home? (If both, also include which one you play more at)
More often at home, since the arcades around here are only open on weekends, although I enjoy both.

4. How did you get involved in DDR?
Saw it in an arcade with my friend, and we dared each other to go play it, although we thought it looked stupid. We both became instantly addicted.

5. Rank the following from 1-5, 1 being the most important and 5 being the least, of what is most important in a DDR game.

- Quality of songs 1
- A good dance mat / pad 2
- Difficulty and variety of levels 3
- Number and quality of modes 4
- Characters 5

6. Do you wear shoes, socks, or nothing on your feet while playing DDR?
At home, in socks, since I have a softpad. At the arcade I wear sneakers. Nike Free 7.0's.

7. Have you tried other DDR-like games? (example: StepMania)
I love StepMania and In the Groove, and can't stand Pump it Up.

8. Have you lost weight from playing DDR? If so, how many pounds?
None. I'm stupidly thin to begin with.

9. Are you male or female?
Male

10. Are you:

-Between 15 and 24 years old

Eighteen actually.

11. Please include any additional comments about DDR.
DDR is fun, exciting, addictive, and generally good for you. Everyone should try it, but most people are too pre-prejudiced to even give it a shot, and write it off instantly. Due to the waning popularity of late, the game has been treated rather poorly at arcades and the general populace hasn't been very receptive to its players or the concept. And thanks to the general lack of quality in the most recent arcade release, a lot of DDR's fanbase is bailing out. Nevertheless, there's a pretty large group of people who play and will continue to play no matter what, and the game won't die anytime soon.

1. Do you play DDR for exercise or for fun?
For fun, although I do subliminally tend to play more when I know I'm gaining weight or eating a lot.

2. How often do you play DDR per week? (An estimate)
I'd say on average, twice. Sometimes I'll go two or three weeks without playing, and sometimes I'll play three or four times a week. It really depends.

3. Do you play at the arcade or at home? (If both, also include which one you play more at)
All at arcades. Never at home anymore.

4. How did you get involved in DDR?
I saw some girls play it at an arcade in Manila in 2000. I started playing a year later.

5. Rank the following from 1-5, 1 being the most important and 5 being the least, of what is most important in a DDR game.

4 - Number and quality of modes
5 - Characters
2 - A good dance mat / pad

6. Do you wear shoes, socks, or nothing on your feet while playing DDR?
Socks + shoes. I can play barefoot, but at arcades, it can get kinda icky. I found a piece of glass embedded in my foot once. Not a pretty sight.

7. Have you tried other DDR-like games? (example: StepMania)
I used to use the Dance With Intensity simulator before it stopped being upgraded because my computer could handled it. I play Stepmania but not much. I love In the Groove and have played Pump, and I've dabbled in other Bemani games too.

8. Have you lost weight from playing DDR? If so, how many pounds?
No, but it's kept my weight the same over the past few years.

9. Are you male or female?

1. Do you play DDR for exercise or for fun?

For fun.

2. How often do you play DDR per week? (An estimate)

Every Friday for two to three hours (that is how much time I spend in the vicinity of a DDR machine, anyway; obviously some of the time is not spent playing, as it is at an arcade).

3. Do you play at the arcade or at home? (If both, also include which one you play more at)

Arcade. I used to play at home, but now I don't. Oh well.

4. How did you get involved in DDR?

There was a DDR MAX 2 machine at the card store where I played Yu-Gi-Oh! back in 2002. I eventually decided to try it, but I hated it. A friend later brought over DDR MAX for the PS2, and that's how I got started.

5. Rank the following from 1-5, 1 being the most important and 5 being the least, of what is most important in a DDR game.

2 - Quality of songs
3 - Difficulty and variety of levels
4 - Number and quality of modes
5 - Characters
1 - A good dance mat / pad

6. Do you wear shoes, socks, or nothing on your feet while playing DDR?

Shoes.

7. Have you tried other DDR-like games? (example: StepMania)

Yes - Stepmania and In the Groove. Other non-arrow-themed rhythm games I've tried are Pop'n Music, Beatmania, Para Para Paradise, and Percussion Freaks.

8. Have you lost weight from playing DDR? If so, how many pounds?

I've not the slightest idea.

9. Are you male or female?

Male.

10. Are you:

-Between 5 and 14 years old

11. Please include any additional comments about DDR.

Great game. Does not improve dancing skill, and is not improved by dancing skill. Helps one make new friends. Provides sense of rhythm. Is very widely stereotyped; generally, players are mocked often.

1. Do you play DDR for exercise or for fun?

Both, at first it was for exercise and successfully lost around 60 lb's (180lb -> 120lb's) and it gave me the motivation and stamina to become a strong cross country runner. Now I play for fun and competition.

2. How often do you play DDR per week? (An estimate)

I play based on my schedule, I play whenever I have free time, lately I haven't played in the last two weeks, but I'll probably play 3-5 days a week over the next couple. It's really on and off for me.

3. Do you play at the arcade or at home? (If both, also include which one you play more at)

Both, but more at home because it's free and my CF pad is much more responsive than most of my local arcades how poorly upkeep the pads.

4. How did you get involved in DDR?

I bought Ultramix on the Xbox way back in the day to lose weight.

5. Rank the following from 1-5, 1 being the most important and 5 being the least, of what is most important in a DDR game.

1. A good dance mat / pad
2. Quality of songs
3. Difficulty and variety of levels
4. Number and quality of modes
5. Characters

6. Do you wear shoes, socks, or nothing on your feet while playing DDR?

Shoes on a hard pad, socks on a soft pad.

7. Have you tried other DDR-like games? (example: StepMania)

I have Stepmania, InTheGroove, PumpItUp, and have tried various others.

8. Have you lost weight from playing DDR? If so, how many pounds?

Yes, 60.

9. Are you male or female?

Male.

10. Are you:

-Between 5 and 14 years old
-Between 15 and 24 years old
-Between 25 and 30 years old
-Between 31 and 35 years old
-36 or older

11. Please include any additional comments about DDR.

I think DDR is a fantastic game for both exercise enthusiasts and able bodied people in general. Music is a very motivational thing, and DDR uses it in a way no other game has before.

1. Do you play DDR for exersize or for fun?
Me, I play it for fun, but I think that exersize is a nice thing to happen. You see too many fatsos playing video games all day... tsk, tsk.

2. How often do you play DDR a week?
Eight days a week, my friend. Eight days a week.

3. Do you play at the arcade or at home?
I play at home, for I have a metal pad!! And most DDR games.

4. How did you get involved in DDR?
Well, when I was 5, a girl named Amanda showed me how to play at this place where DDR was free.

5. Rank the following from 1-5, 1 being the most important and 5 being the least, of what is most important in a DDR game.

1. Quality of songs.
2. Difficulty and variety of levels
3. A good dance mat/pad
4. Number and QUALITY of modes (oh well, so you have a lot of modes, but are they GOOD?)
5. Characters.

6. Do you wear shoes socks or nothing on your feet while playing DDR?
I wear socks, and have MONDO CALLUSES on my feet from ripped socks. I've had to go through, like, 37 different pairs of socks when playing DDR.

7. Have you tried any other DDR-like games? (example: StepMania)
I've never played StepMania.
I've tried Pump it Up, but the machine ate my money and froze up before my first song.
I've never played FLOW: Urban Dance Uprising.
I've played In The Groove. In fact, when I was in Deleware, I was the first person to play on the ITG machine in the Bethany Beach arcade.
I've never played Dance Factory.

8. Have you lost weight from playing DDR? If so, how many pounds?
I have, actually. 38 pounds, to be exact.

9. Are you male or female?
Male.

10. Are you:

{Between 5 and 14 years old}
Between 15 and 24 years old
Between 25 and 30 years old
Between 31 and 35 years old
36 or older

11. Please include any additional comments about DDR.
DDR is, in all respect, an addictive exersize game that, as I mentioned earlier, gets fatzos off the couch. Even though that there is critizisim against it, I think that most people should give it a shot. Sadly, some players are mocked often, but then get treated like kings if they clear a Heavy/Challenge/10-footer song. It's probably the most presigious of video games. That's why I established a DDR Club at our school, and even got our school to buy a PS2 and DDR! If people got more involved in DDR, our school's band would get a whole lot better, with the rhythms and all. Also, some people wouldn't bump into others, causing them to lose something important (like homework, or their pencil case) before their next class. Even though it doesn't improve dancing, it still taught me how to dance from the characters dancing in the background.
