I have a son who plays dance games like ddr, itg and piu and he is really good. I feel his grades have improved dramatically. He was getting c's and d's last year and this year he is an honor student. Have any of you seen an improvement in your grades? Just curious. |

I completely expected this to be the usual DDR Chit-Chat type of thread - something like "do u think ddr hurts ur grades? im so obsesed with it that i failed all my classes lol"
Anyway, I don't think that DDR would somehow give you the ability to get higher grades. After all, it's just exercise, and the only way to do better in school is to study and work harder (or cheat ). I suppose it's possible that it could give you more motivation somehow, but that seems like a stretch to me. My guess is that your son is either taking easier classes this year, or that something important has changed for the better in his life or his general mindset. _________________

ACTUALLY.... I've done some research on this... And the music/dancing games really DO help raise your IQ. (what you do with the higher IQ is a different story).
Dr Phil had a guy on his show a couple months back who'd written a book, I believe it was titled "The IQ Answer". This author/doctor worked with some kids who had failing grades... he didn't tutor them on school work though. He taught them to listen to a beat, then move to that beat. Teaching them something that simple helped them do better in school.
I think Dr. Phil is a quack sometimes, but the doctor who wrote the book seemed pretty neat. And I was thinking "moving to a beat is exactly what DDR forces you to do"....so I looked into a little bit... and GENERALLY Speaking, kids who play DDR do have higher IQ's. And USUALLY do better in school. (Like I said, what you do with your IQ is a different story. Some kids may resort to programming computers rather than doing homework).
But yes, I think it's entirely possible that DDR helped your son raise his grades. _________________

Hmm, well it may affect my job performance [but then again, I doubt it]. I only take 1 extra long lunchbreak a week for it anyway. _________________

My grades have improved since I got into much better shape and now feel a lot more comfortable in everyday life. Improved coordination and reflexes have also helped me perform better in my seminar classes. It had the greatest impact in physical education though, as my mile time went from about 9:46 all the way down to 6:37 in one school year ever since I began DDR (it's at 6:00 now). _________________

I think it's because it gives a person something to work hard at and focus on to achieve a goal. Whether it's a score or weight-loss. _________________

Of course DDR improved my grades. I have now AAA'ed my math classes two years straight. But each were only on Expert. Next semester I'm moving up to Challenge level.
But in all seriousness, ever since I started DDR, I never saw any difference in my performance in school. However, I can understand when people say how it could help. Not anything out of the ordinary, though. DDR probably did nothing more than serve as a healthy muse that took a person's mind into the right alternate way of thinking (rhythm comprehension) that allowed him/her to become more open-minded when solving open-ended problems. _________________

I would say in general, 'probably yes,' though not necessarily in my own case -- DDR initially involves learning a new code system (LDUR, similar to learning a simple alphabet), but also involves problem solving (hit the arrows...), creativity (...turn, spin, fail song, or double-step..., add steps to create a new rhythm), pattern recognition (LDR, URUR, [LOL] DURDUR, etc.), rhythm recognition (...at the right time..., also very logically/mathematically-related), aerobic exercise (keeps your body in shape, keeps you motivated, most likely helps with brain cells (One link to a recent study)), and a sense of accomplishment (improvement, etc.).
However, DDR -can- be a distraction, but it's better when it's functioning as an occasional diversion. _________________

I guess since DDR trains the mind to work in an "autopilot" sort of way, that might be true. _________________

That's what I was talking about. Applying the same skills in a different approach.
Sometimes all it takes is to use the same set of skills in a different focus in order to better-understand how to apply them in other problem-types (ex: school stuff) that require the same skillset. That's all DDR did, really. _________________

Thanks for all your input. I do make sure all his homework gets done before he plays. So I'm sure that helps because if it were up to him he would play rather than do homework. It seems to have improved his self esteem and his grades so I was just curious if it's done the same for you guys. Again thanks for your input. |

not really, luvmykids. They've been going down. Sorry.
One of our policies for DDR Club is, though, homework before play. |

ALRIGHT! I FFCd band and got a quad star, wewt!
There are many factors to consider and any of them could be the cause of rising (or falling) grades. Really, I think most of the reasons have been dealt with here, but there can be many more theories. _________________

Yeah, while playing, I hear adults probably mumble,"That kid has no life."
^Unfortunately, a person can't get a star or an S+ on his report card.
Pff, it's just a game!

I think it's a great game and shame on the adult who calls any kid a loser.
I think some of you are amazing. I love to watch my kids play and I encourage them to because it's great excersize. I think it's great as long as you do other things and don't completely become obsessed to the point of letting everything else in your life fall apart. So keep on dancin. |

It's usually adults that praise them and kids that criticize them.
BTW, it's exercise. _________________
