I looked for a topic on this and didnt find one, so here we go.

I had an idea, to either buy a bare cabinet, and put everything needed into it, and add on 2 home made pads, or to build the cabinet from scratch. And then to buy a stepmania cd-rom, run it in the cabinet and allow for coin use, but my problem is i havent found how to install the coin acceptor with stepmania, or how to install simpacks onto an arcade cabinet.

does anyone know how that'd be possible?

There was a Stepmania arcade game called DDR Forever at Tokyo Game Action, but Konami forced them to remove it.

I've thought about this too, really want to do it at some point!!

The thing about getting a cabinet is, why not just buy a small computer, with a few gigs of hard disk space and some graphics power, and then build an empty cabinet to house it? I know very little or nothing about arcade systems, so maybe I'm being naive by thinking you should just run computer Stepmania in an arcade-style cab.

I'm going to make this a reality sooner or later... just haven't done my research on it. The alternative for me is buying a SuperNOVA machine someday, but this might be better and cheaper... of course, it's the 'better' part that appeals to me (all songs evar!)

Oh, and if I'm not mistaken the guy who owns www.ddruk.com has his own machine, called the DDX or some such - also based on Stepmania, it's supposed to have an extremely comprehensive songlist.

The thing about the computer would probally work, but I probally know less than you about those sort of things. I don't think anybody (konami and such) would mind if you made one though if you didn't charge for it, like if you didn't make any money off of it. If I had more time, talent and money I would probally try that, it would be kinda fun to have at your house.

it's definitely do-able. it would just take alot of know-how and time to debug how to get both pads and the buttons working on a CPU, since each arrow has 4 sensors. it could be tricky if not done right. (case in point - BoXoRs. RoXoR tried to convert old DDR machines to run on a modified version of SM CVS, and their software was the problem.) given enough time, it will be feasible and relatively easy to do so.

It's a rather complicated process, but this guy has done it. He still owns the machine, too. You might want to ask him about it.
