You can get a dualshock2 used for $5; do so.
They work well 99% of the time, and if they have issues, they're easy to take apart and fix. _________________

Your second was using a controller. The game offers no challenge after about three days on controller. _________________

Well, you bought it second-hand by the sounds of it, so almost anything could be wrong. In my experience, the ps2 rejects a controller if it finds anything wrong with it.
Not a single button works at all? That sounds like a busted controller to me. Have you had any success with the analog sticks?
Even if you do repair this thing and get it working, you probably won't have a very high quality or high sensitivity controller. I'd buy yourself another. _________________

Make sure the sensor sheet is plugged in to the controller chip.
If the analog sticks don't work either, then it's probably a busted chip or damaged ground cable. _________________
