Simple, yet effective alternative to the metal dance pad?

I'm sitting there on youtube looking through some of their vids when i run across http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sz91FXb759w&NR. this guy is getting amazing scores and I look down to see what kind of pad it is when i mutter to myself, "that's my dance pad!"

all that he did was get a $20 dance pad from gamestop and mod it by placing a large piece of plexiglass over the top and I'm assuming a piece of wood on the bottom. I don't know if he already has, but I would buy a large adhesive rubber mat for the bottom to reduce movement. my granddad said a piece of plexiglass 3ftx3ft (1/4in) would go for ~$10-20 at home depot, and wood is relatively cheap. so if you already have the dance pad, then you're probably looking at spending about $30 or $40 total, or $60 if you need a new pad (which would probably not be a bad idea anyways). and you can use and reuse the plexi, even if the dance pad gets messed up, just spend 20 bucks and get a new one!

it seems fairly effective and responsive, because he has several vids on youtube, most of which are AAA's unless they're some insane mods. anyways, how about some input from you folks?

He's actually doing those on his trusty old CF. =)
He's had it for forever, so it's probably one of the good ones.

There's also a modded softpad that's always sitting by it, but I've never watched him actually use it.

Anyway, modded softpads are great, if you mod them right and you mod them before they get messed up.

or is he using a cf? hmm, it's hard to tell, but the one on the left is definitely modded, but the one on the right...

uhh.. thats the ~$350(with shipping n tax) cobalt flux you're talking about. The other one on the left is the modded softpad. I also wonder what type of pad used for modding because i want to help get my friend a modded softpad.

The near one's a modded softpad and the far one's a Cobalt Flux.
I'm not saying that a modded softpad is bad at all; I can clear most 10's on one with almost as good of scores as I get on my modded tx1000, but he's AAA'ing all that crazy poopy on his CF.
