i mean, i honestly STILL DONT GET WHY ITS SO AMAZING! i owned 1(and sold it....because it just was boring after about 2 weeks for me), and now that i played guitar hero 2, in spite of it having a WAYYY better songlist, i STILL dont like the core gameplay! its just so repetitive to me and there isnt a real challenge aspect to me....with beatmania, elite beat agents, and DDR if i fail a song im REALLY motivated to keep trying until i pass it, but with guitar hero there is none of that. whenever i see people play it, it always looks fun but then i play it and get disapointed. maybe its because i dont like how long the songs are. i dont know. i just really dont like guitar hero and dont get whats so frick great about it.
does anyone else think this? _________________

Actually, I like GH but I don't think it's the messiah of music games.
The game play is okay, but when you're not really into the type of music in the game, it does take its toll. However, one would never expect bunch of house, J Pop or electronica in a game with "guitar" in the title. So if you don't like rock, then GH isn't going to set the world on fire for you. But, if you like the gameplay, then you can deal with the music. |

i didn't like guitar hero for its really long songs (i'm used to the 1:30 - 2 min songs for bemani games). other than that, it's a fun game |

i agree with almost everything you said but for the most part i feel that the real songs in GH 2 lack compaired to the real songs in GH 1 (several of the higherend regulars and encores are very very cool though)
its the wow or halo 2 of music games simple and widly apealable _________________

EBT pretty much hit it on the nose. This is the game that finally put rhythm gaming in the mainstream, so for better or for worse, there'll always be people who feel negatively about the title that finally pulled it off.
I got into it from day one since it's basically Frequency/Amplitude with a guitar, and I like a good amount of the songs, but I by far prefer Harmonix's earlier works, and I wish it was those that had gotten this level of attention instead of GH.
I love Freezepop and all, but Symbion Project > all. _________________

I have Guitar Hero 2, and I really don't like it at all.
Are there any timing windows in this game or is it just "You get the notes or you don't?" Because that seems really easy. Even Freebird doesn't look like it would be that hard if I played the game as much as ITG... |

I don;t really like GH, because een though it did bring music games into the mainstream, nowadays EVERY n00b I meet thinks that EVERY music game is a ripoff of GH. I have seriously been told by some silly kid that DDR was a ripoff of it. _________________

yeah, when i brought beatmania to a local LAN gaming center, everyone was like "is that like a techno guitar hero?" god, arrogance of people makes me mad. then i clearly pointed out the copyright date on the box. they still didnt seem to get it.
BEATMANIA WAS FIRST!!!
but yeah, its not that i dont like the music in guitar hero. i dont ONLY listen to j-pop, fyi. its not the lack of music, its the lack of fun. since the songs are full versions, they really drag on and gets boring....how bout "shortened versions" where you just play like the chorus and the solo where its about 2 minutes long? i do think harmonix is good at getting the mainstream crowd involved, but they should do something new next time. _________________

You have to remember something. You're among the more hardcore people who even know what a rhythm game is...along with every other person on this site, which is about .05% of the total people who play DDR. And, for every person in America who plays DDR, there are probably about 50 who play Guitar Hero. Start doing some math, and you'll realize why people don't know about something like Beatmania that sold about four copies of the damn game in America.
It happens with every genre. Take SFIII: 3rd Strike or Guilty Gear XX (pick a version), two of the greatest fighting games of all time. If you show that to some random guy walking into Best Buy or Wal-Mart, you'll get the response "OH LAWDS IS DAT LIEK MORTAL KOBMAT?!" Is Mortal Kombat better? God no. But which is more popular? Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that part out. Is FF the end-all be-all of RPGs? I'd personally rather play Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana if I touch something Square (or FFVI or X if it has to be FF), but heaven forbid I say that FFVII isn't the greatest game of all freakin' time. Want another horrible example? Puzzle Bobble and Snood. I don't even need to touch on that...it says everything by itself.
Happens with other stuff, too. Music? Take something like Nightwish and have some random 15-year old Evanescense fan listen to it. "THEY RIPPED OFF MY AMY LEEEEEE!!" Then they write a bad poem and cut themselves. Movies, books, whatever. It happens.
Also, with the popularity comes the misinformation. Beatmania predates Guitar Hero by about 8 years (give or take), but most people don't know that and honestly don't care. Shoot, if I put Amplitude next to Guitar Hero, someone would probably say that Amplitude is a Guitar Hero knockoff. -_- Even within ONE GAME, there are casual vs hardore disputes. Smash Bros. Melee? Edgehog or chain-throw a casual player once and watch them throw a fit. Soul Calibur III (PS2)? Use Setsuka's VC chain throw once and they'll probably quit on the spot (since they probably also think ring outs and throws are cheap). Mario Kart DS, snaking. If I knew examples for Halo 2, I'd point those out as well, but I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about when I obviously don't.
All in all, it's just a classic example of quality vs. mainstream. Does that mean the mainstream product is bad? Not necessarily. Just means that, whenever someone brings up something of that genre, you'll see the comparison made, regardless of if it's been out for years before the more popular thing. And it's something that probably most (if not all) people on here are guilty of or have been guilty of at some point in time in one form or another.
In short, it's gonna happen. May as well grow some tolerance.

the 4-6 minute tracks totally kill it for me. i dont care how fun it is, when it gets repetative, it gets BORING. if the tracks maxed at 2-3 minutes, i would find myself enjoying it much more. i have GH1, and most of the time i find myself sighing and wanting the song to be over because im playing the same lines over and over for what seems like an endless amount of time. i mean... it IS a fun game to me, but christ, i just dont have the attention span to play the same 5 notes over and over. if anything, it just shows how boring and repetative most mainstreem music is from a technical standpoint.
side note:

wow, someone else knows nightwish? good stuff. my favorite song of theirs is Sleepwalker.
but if you want even more "omg they ripped off evanescence, but not; i'm just ignorant" look at the japanese group, m.o.v.e.'s album Deep Calm. _________________

i guess you do state valid points. expecially the whole mortal kombat thing, because that is really something i can relate to since i brought guity gear X-2(when it first came out) to my friends house and hes like "OMG MORTAL KOMBAT IS BETTER ITS NOT CARTOONY AND HAS BLOOD!!"
its a lot like guitar hero...people like it because it has popular american music and real guitars....wooo! when i told my sister about how i take gameplay> songlists in any music game, she looked at me like i was crazy.
prime example of this: elite beat agents. it may have had a terrible songlist, but the gameplay was absolutely amazing. in fact, ive had it for over 3 weeks and im still addicted. its getting as much play as my nintendo wii. _________________

I've had the exact... same... problem... god I want to kill these people. I frick hate Guitar Hero with all my heart. I hate the characters, I hate the songlist (3 songs on the original GH that I liked, but not anymore seeing how they were overplayed), and I hate the obvious ripoff of Guitar Freaks (add two buttons, a whammy bar, and take away the timing window and speed modifiers. Made for America!!).
I was in the mall the other day and this chick had two Guitar Hero controllers in her purse. It's officially a cultural icon, it's "cool" to play Guitar Hero, even cooler to be good at it. Not so with DDR, it gets no respect. _________________

Maybe the girl was GASP taking her GH setup to a friend's house to play? People don't carry two large gaming controllers around as fashion accessories. _________________

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]
