isn't the bar there for a reason? if there wasnt, then why would it be there? why would it give the game a bad rep? i have to hold on to the bar so in case my knee gives out i have some support over it. and for others im sure they have their reasons ... keeping their balence, or whatever their reason is ...
i dont think anything gives the game a bad rep except for maybe talking about it way too much ... thats all i can think of really.. hey, its a game! _________________

1. People who obviously do not know how to share a machine.
2. Posers that only play now because it is some-what popular. However, back in the late 90's and early 2000's the same people were making fun of others for playing.
3. DDR Chara-phobes that complain about them, yet somehow can tolerate the flashy seizure inducing background videos. Sorry, it boggles my mind.
4. People who like to "Pwn" others on ddrfreak forums.
5. People that go on "DDR" boards just to trash DDR. Can't they go somewhere else?
That's about it for me. |

Not liking characters doesn't really give DDR a bad rep. In fact, only DDR players themselves really notice the characters, and people who play DDR would be pretty dumb to give it a bad rep.
I think this thread was intended for people more ignorant about the game or stereotypes that may seem unatractive.......like endless sets of Butterfly Beginne played by emos and 10-year-old girls.
I've seen that plenty of times, and yes, those sets give DDR a bad rep.
I think the concept itself seems unattractive to some. Some people just don't like to move, so they find cheap excuses to not play it like calling it a "girl's game" (Even though most of the pros are guys.) or just call all the music "Jap crap" (Even though DDR's music is quite diverse, more diverse than ITG at least, and yes, this is coming from a big ITG fan.) _________________

I admit it, I'm guilty of having talked about DDR WAYYY too much at times, but then I also recently got into it, relatively speaking.
It must just be my fortune that I've never had anyone make fun of me for playing, even though compared to 90% of the players at the arcade I go to, I'm more than a little hefty. It may be that people are impressed that someone of my size can move that fast.
I know the bars are there for safety, the game even has the disclaimer that "Extreme movements can be dangerous" or whatever incarnation of this statement is there. I'm guilty of using the bar for the harder songs (HVAM Heavy, CSFILSM Heavy, MaxX Unlimited Standard come to mind, for me at any rate), and many people I see use the bar for some of the harder 9s and most 10s.
What I think is the worst for DDR is that many people simply don't understand the basic premise, or are afraid to try and play it. It was mentioned before, that people just don't like a lot of physical activity. Most gamers I know will not play DDR because they have to "get up and move". (that's in a DDR song's lyrics, isn't it?). We're in a day and age when a large percentage of the population are "obese". Scratch that, it has nothing to do with this.
People are simply afraid of what is different. Dance Dance Revolution puts two things together that to most people don't mesh well: Playing a video game and exercise. Dance in this case, aerobic exercise. Good for the heart. And since when does more than 25% of the population care about exercise these days? It's sad, but true. Most people I see complain about exercise, and I've even heard some people comment that "such trifles are a waste of time and give me less time to watch TV and eat". Yes, I have heard that statement, VERBATIM, spoken at the mall close to the arcade I play at. It makes me SICK!
If I have someone ask me about DDR while I'm playing, you can bet I'm going to encourage them to play. I've helped some people get started on it, and there was even a father and his two children who were at the machines a few weeks ago, the children playing, father actually was VERY interested in it, so I directed him to GameStop and other such places, as well as Fry's Electronics, to find the home versions. I own the PS2 games DDR Extreme and DDRMAX2, told him about them, and where he can get some decent dance pads to use at home. I'm sure by now he's bought them and is having a blast with his kids.
Probably the biggest turnoff for potential new players is that people get teased for doing anything that even remotely resembles exercise. I'm sure I've had some people comment on how stupid I look while playing. but I can't hear them. Wouldn't matter anyway, I could care less what those kind of people think. _________________

- It's a friggin' dancing game that doesn't make its players look like they're dancing, hence the hecklers and the patronizers.
- A lot of its fanbase are otaku nerds.
- The rest are emo or goth kids(who could also be otaku nerds).
- The songlist, no matter what game, is full of eurodance, techno, trance, eurobeat, J-pop, and a bunch of other songs that're unappealing to a lot of people(in America, anyway).
- To diehard players, it's too easy so they move to ITG(though I strongly think that they feel this way because they never tried Doubles).
- To go a bit deeper, DDR is a game that attracts everyone. Problem is that not everyone gets along with each other. Drama happens. I've seen a lot of it go on. _________________

People trying to defend DDR over the Internet. |
Why should people have a wrong idea about a game, ideas that can and usually leads to unnecessary demonization of participants?
Nobody said you had to post in this topic if you are just going to be inflammatory about it, it's attitudes like that that lead to these kinds of topics.
I can't really contribute any reasons since the best ones have been said. |
I can't contribute any either, but you're very right.
Not to mention, this is a site for DDR. People who don't know about it don't (typically) know about this site.
If you were to try and defend DDR, this would be the site. This is a DDR community, and, after all, all of us already think well enough of DDR that "defending DDR over the internet", at least in this site, can't possibly give it a bad rep.
I'm sorry, I don't like smart-mouths. The question is valid. |

He actually does have an account here. In fact, there was a thread about his vids a while ago and he posted in it asking everyone to forgive him for being a noob.

Well, some people like harder charts on single, which DDR doubles can't provide. And, along with your Doubles statment, some of us HAVE tried Doubles and are good enough to do it. I, after many fails and curses, passed every doubles song on Extreme, Unlimited, LoM, PSMO, you name it.
So, I know I'm not the best doubles player, so that means some people want even more of a challenge IN DOUBLE, which is DEFINITELY ITG. Some of those charts are intense hard, highest I can pass is 11's on double.
Oh, but about the emos, goths, and diehard anime fans, you are sadly right. That is a large percent. _________________

how about labeling players as "bar huggers" or anything else when playing? i get called it sometimes and I hate it. so what if i hold on to the bar! heck even when im playing at home i hold on to something. I have to.
as for the butterfly ... IMO most new people coming into the game dont know thats its a old over-played song and just liked it for the song.
btw: may i ask, whats with the bashing of the kid in the video? thats another thing that gives a bad rep ... people not wanting to try because of people who like to bash and say that their no good because 'they can do better'. its sad that I can go on youtube and see comments on videos of people playing in beginner-light-standard being all trash saying that they all stink. discourages people from playing the game at all, IMO. _________________

Well I admit that is more of a personal annoyance but I know a lot of people who use characters. Why do you think they brought them back? |

^ So? That doesn't make it any more relevant to the topic. The fact is that this isn't a "what annoys me" thread. I don't see how hating characters (which most non-DDRers don't even know about) gives DDR a bad reputation.
shygirl1999 wrote: | btw: may i ask, whats with the bashing of the kid in the video? |
It's not because he wasn't very good, but because he was really cocky about it.
If you look around at the accomplishment threads here, you'll see people saying "good job" to each other even if the scores are really low. That's generally how it works; YouTube is an exception because (based on the comments I've seen there) at least 50% of the people there are complete idiots. _________________
