Konami will sue.
I'm in the process of convincing my local community center to invest in a dedicab, so I'll be able to attempt various things soon. _________________

Regardless of the morality of the situation, I mean.
One of the reasons Napster got shut down was because, regardless of the merits of the software, it was being used illicitly 99.99% of the time. In happy Utopia-land, we wouldn't outlaw a tool that has a potentially legal use regardless of the illegal uses, but here in Corporate America, the lawyer-assisted courts do not see it that way. Napster never gave any copyrighted material to the users - it just facilitated it.
So regardless of how innocent you may think the situation is, the fact of the matter is that were this matter to come up on behalf of the RIAA, Roxor would likely be found guilty of committing contributory infringement. _________________

Does the same hold true for Vib Ribbon and "Dance Factory", two games that generate stages based on music? _________________

Ask the RIAA. They're the ones that will sue taxi drivers for turning on the radio in the car, and that insist on royalties being paid for "Happy Birthday To You", causing family-oriented grill-style restaurants everywhere to come up with their own stupid birthday jingles.
The answer is probably "yes", but those are smaller cookies. In the case of ITG, it's "public performance", which generally gets a bit more attention. _________________

well now it seems pretty clear that it was released with little regard to what sort of problems it may cause, since they are no longer in charge of the franchise, and thus probably not responsible anymore. i think it was you who actually referred to it as a possible last-ditch effort to spite konami (or was that someone else?) _________________

I wanna know, what can Konami do about it, now that they acquired In The Groove? Is Roxor still allowed to host the update(s) on it's website? And if there was an r22, could it be made by Roxor? I can see Konami putting out a r22 that shuts down this feature (but gives you butterfly and xepher!! ) If Konami has ITG, and some artist doggy about his song beng played on ITG, would it be Roxor's bad or could they sue Konami? In addition to the arcade owner and the player, that is.
R21 could be the future of videogames! If it weren't for the damn music industry this sort of thing could potentially bring new life to the arcades. As a member of a band with copywritten music (White Pacific), I would be overjoyed if someone played a simfile to one of our songs in public (if it weren't for that all the simfiles I've seen have sucked.) _________________

ah, oh well. i dont feel like digging through the thread to find out.
anyway, i had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine today that reminded me of an incident that happend several years ago. it took place right here in san diego county, actually. i believe it made the news here too, but it was very old. anyway, the situation was that one person saw one background scene in one game of solo 2000 during the song I'm Alive which showed needles. it was a little girl playing and she told her mom about it. her mom then went to a local news station and the story snowballed into showing ddr as being something about scantily clad nurses and needles for drugs. within 2 weeks, all solo 2000 machines dissapeared throughout san diego county (there is one solo 4th mix that remains). just imagine what would happen if someone overheard an itg player playing, say, Uncle Fucker on an r21 itg2 machine. i'm guessing the outcome would play out very similarly. _________________

im not complaining, im just saying that this very likely situation will come up at one point or another. if people flip their lid over that stuff in solo 2000, imagine what they'll do if someone feels mischiefy with R21. _________________

I just read through the thread yestreday and no one mentioned this as a "last-ditch effort to spite Konami," but I will admit to thinking that myself, considering that the main headlines were "ITG Supports custom songs!" then practically the next day, "ITG Acuired by Konam1!" which makes me wonder if people complain about crap if Konami could be blamed in any way. _________________

Well god, it was on the first page.

And I find this to be an excessively valid point. r21, i believe, came between when the Email saying 'ITG was being acquired' came out and the news that Konami got ITG. _________________

I actually remember that...I used to have the news story bookmarked, but I don't anymore and I'm not gonna look for it. And that's partly why I don't play Uncle Fucker off my card much, so as not to draw much attention. I think this is different though in that it's user-submitted bad stuff, not bad stuff on the actual game. In my opinion this is really no different than me running around the arcade shouting obscenities, which I do anyways and nobody has complained yet (I give them tickets to shut them up) _________________
