OK, so the situation is as follows: My wife and I decided to put our toe in as far as the whole DDR thing. I purchased a cheap pair of pads off of ebay (Yes, I know that is taboo here, but I did it before I knew) and an old used copy of DDR Max. Total cost shipped $55. Well, after getting everything, we decided we like it, not enough to go buy a new metal set of pads, but enough to play it semi-regularly (3-4x month). Anyway, my question is, is there a simple (read cheap) way to make sure that we get the max (accuracy and life) out of these acknowledged crappy foam ignition knockoffs?

I had considered putting plywood inside the sleave, as the mod guide said, but that seems redundant considering we play on hardwood floors... So instead, I was thinking of buying another layer of foam (the under workout equipment kind) to slip in the pad, but I'm not even sure if that would benefit. Any assistance/advice is greatly appreciated.

FYI, yes, if we keep playing we will get better pads, but that is at least 1yr down the line, so that suggestion is moot. Thanks.

ITG isn't the best game to start out on(nor is max 1, i reccomend MAX2 for starting out), but the 2 pads are amazing and once you get better you can play ITG. Those pads can survive TONS of heavy/expert play....my friend has one thats unmodded and its worked for him for almost a year now....hes on heavy too!

Wow, I'm almost tempted to make my rich friend Sam get that.
His DDR set-up is pretty pathetic.
But he was on Standard a week after starting, so I want him to keep it up.

Anyway, MAX is a great version to start on; I whored Ordinary World for 3 months when I started, and Look to the Sky, Sandstorm, Abyss, and Dark Black Forest are great songs to develope on. (one of my friends and I played Sandstorm on standard about 30 times at my 14th birthday party, a few months after we got MAX and a used official Konami pad; I went from a 2-3 player to a 5-6 player in 10 hours. E7.gif ) Beginner mode is total BS, and Max2 doesn't have very many easy songs on light.
ITG's not a bad place to start either.
Better than Max2, at least.
Extreme's the worse place to start.
To any beginners stuck on extreme: GET MAX2, MAX, AND EX2 NOW!

You said it. My very first DDR game was MAX, and it helped me get off to a good start. The absence of beginner mode saved me from too easy stepcharts that would've tricked me into thinking that they were just right instead of too easy like they are. Your right, MAX has plenty of good Light stepcharts, it helped me ease into the game. Your right about MAX 2 as well. I have a friend who started on MAX 2. He started on beginner for about a week, bad. Then he moved onto light because beginner was too easy. But because of the absence of easy enough light songs, he didn't get into Heavy as quickly as I did. If he started on MAX (he couldn't get it because the store was out of MAX's) like I did he'd be just as good as me.

I saw one of those at GameStop the other day and almost started drooling. I have been looking for ITG CS forever, and everyone says those pads are so good. I have 2 pads already, but one is an RO3 and the other is a Mad Catz. It's 99.9% impossible to play Doubles on pads with different heights. So yeah. I want it.

I've never played MAX, but my first game was MAX2 and I definately think you should get it. I've seen it at Best Buy for $20. Don't get EXTREME2. At least not yet. goog.gif

MAX 2 has plenty of good songs for noobs...and it has far more noticable songs that dont suck(love at first sight, twilight zone, will i, and take me away all come to mind). But yeah, that ITG bundle is great. I think i might get it soon for a tolerable doubles setup....my BNS DX sparkle and konami soft pad dont work well for doubles E4.gif.

Haha, I tried playing Doubles once on my beat up Konami softpad and my generic 6-panel metal pad.
Fail and then some.
The pads slid in different directions too.
