I had a text conversation with Naoki Maeda aka De-sire/De-strad etc about his myspace page. He isn't allowed to post any of his music on myspace because it's owned by Konami even though he made it. I asked him what he thought about me making a page with a couple of his songs embedded in it using a free file hosting service. The page would give full credit to the artist and to Konami and would in no way allow users to download the music, only listen.

Spreading the glory of Mr. De-sire OR opening up one major legal issue can of worms? Advice please!

Isn't that similar to having a website stream bootleg movies rather than offering download links to them?

I dont know! I was just asking!

I've been told that this sort of thing goes on all time, but I wanted to ask a group of people who I at first believed would have a little more knowledge on the subject and a little less smart remarks.

It's no different than websites (that are totally legal) that allow people to post their own personal playlists of music for all to listen to.

If I had a Myspace, I'd do it. I don't give a crap what other people would say. The worst they can do is remove the links to the music streams. I think...

Well, what I had planned on doing is completely harmless, but companies can get crazy stupid with their property. I just wanted to let people preview the music. But before they attack me (if they indeed would) they would need to attack the thousands upon thousands of piraters as well.

By the way peoples, in speaking with De-sire (his myspace says this as well) he is having a music contest for anyone who wishes to enter. Since he cannot post his own music he is putting up music created by the fans and judging them. I'm not sure if there is a prize or not but I guess being recognized by the man as the best is pretty good.

1. Naoki doesn't speak in English, let alone write.
2. He wants to keep a low profile; his having a MySpace account is contrary to this.

Guys, it's your turn to add.

Plus, his stuff under DE-SIRE is definitely not his best work, nor his only work.

No, what those sites are doing is posting HTML playlists of what they listen to. You can't just start listening to what they're playing.

The sites that *do* stream the music are either doing it legally with license from the copyright holders, or they're doing it illegally. It's pretty much black and white.

It doesn't matter if what you're doing is being nice or helpful to the community. Ultimately, Konami has the copyrights, so they get to say what happens and what doesn't happen, and you don't.

And last but not least, if you're going to get legal advice from the Internet, at least get it on Slashdot. Taking legal advice from members of DDR Freak is like going on a fishing trip in Libya.

He does. He also has an AIM account that he signs into at least once a week. And a LiveJournal. And he posts on the official ITG boards. And he has a webcam in his apartment that anyone can view.

Naoki Maeda on the other hand, has (or must have) a busier lifestyle that wouldn't leave him much time to use a trendy site like Myspace to chat amongst all the fans.

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]

Internet + MySpace = someone pretending to be someone they are not!

I've seen dozens of artist on myspace, just doing a simple search and come up with resuls showing at least 3 if not more different account. Most without pictures, others with pictures off of covers of magazine or something they posed for.

A few do say "I'm a fan" or "This is a fan" or something along those lines. I don't doubt that some artist out there do have mypace....but for all sorts of legal issues, I'm sure they're not going to open up and say "Hi, I'm _____ the famous artist from ____ ".

Unless someone on here has a law degree.....asking someone is like opening a can of worms only to find Pandora's box stuffed inside.

Yeah, you know, cause Japanese artists use blogs from other countries that aren't used at all in Japan. It would have been plausable in the slightest if you had said Gree or Mixi or any Japanese blog. I think someone just got a hefty dose of the internet...

Well, I know of Dave Grohl's personal Myspace and I know for a fact it isn't fake, so why is it so far fetched that Naoki has a Myspace

Myspace is more popular than I think you guys realize
