Interesting, do you think there is a corrolation between flat footing and knee problems? I don't have the best knees, but my knees weren't good well before I started playing dance games, so I guess I wouldn't notice if my knees really aren't in the best shape if you know what I mean. _________________

THANK GOD! i thought i was the only person here who has poopy knees! Yes it is true flatfooting is worse for your knees but it is still better to play with. What you can do to help the pain is buy knee braces and shoe gel inserts. They seem to have helped me alot but it's still painful, I reccomend you get some before you have to go to the knee doctor like me =( |

i just gotta figure out a playing method, so i dont endup destroying my ankles/arches again.
2 friends of mine have ruined their knee's (one blew out his ACL, the other has HUGE pain issues and has to wear a brace).
so, i worry. _________________

I would think, though I'm just speculating, that arrow-smashing, be it flatfooted or no, would eventually take a toll on your knees, much like basketball or jogging.
Also, I like, to use, as many commas, as possible, in a sentence.
But in all seriousness, I am curious as to what the long-term effects would be of DDR/ITG on one's knees. The genre itself has only been around 8 years give or take, and very few people have played all of those 8 years, but I wonder if years from now, as people play more and more long-term, what will happen in that department. _________________

I think the first time I really flat-footed was when I too tired to really play. I accidently had Destiny on 1.5x but I managed to stream the middle when I usually struggle. I went onto DDR immediately afterwards and found Max 300 [i]so[/b] much easier than usual (although my PA was crap). New technique takes some getting used do.
I also worry about the long term effects of constant arrow smashing. Surely I'd think playing barless is worse due to the extra weight on your legs and knees. |

barless play is most definitely more high impact.
basically, i cant see it having any more long-term effects than my soccer playing did. after 9-10 years of soccer, my knees started to hurt when i ran. this wasnt due to the fact that they "gave out", i was just getting out of practice and my knees didnt like it. so i stopped.
if your knees are hurting when you play, DONT PLAY ANYMORE. review your playstyle, and try to take out any awkward habits you have. a big one is crouching. people need to stop doing it. another is maybe if you turn your feet in awkward directions. basically anything that makes you uncomfortable when you play is something that needs to go. _________________

A player is considered good in my opinion when a player of a higher level comments about you or see's you triple A a song. Or if somebody looks up to you. Hope it clarifies. |

He must not really know what flatfooting is from an expert's standpoint. Hell, I always play toes and even I know that when I do my BS flatfooting that I'm more consistent (for now, consistently bad, but if I really practiced, I know I could do it better). So I'm assuming that he really isnt informed in what hes talking about. _________________

When i was at an arcade...some guy was playing with me..and he plays flat-footed so ask him how he does it and he says when hes really tired. But i dont get it, tired? when im tired i play on my tipi toes...i can somewhat play flat-footed but not like Kevbo. _________________

Well playing flat-footed really helps conserve energy because you don't need to move as much (and having large feet/shoes helps). I was really too tired to play, but I forced myself anyway and the result was being able to do fast streams with little effort. There's no way I'd be able to do fast streams on my toes when I'm that tired, although surprisingly, it's what I used to do. Before (and probably still now), when I got tired and had streams to do, I put in extra effort and inadvertently switched to toe play... which really doesn't help. |

I play flat footed all the time. Originally I changed to it because I felt that I could hear the rhythmn my feet made more clearly. That helped improve my fa (pa really since I started doing it with ddr.) Later on, I realized I wouldn't have to move as much if I constricted myself to using the balls of my feet for the up arrow, sides of my feet for left and right, and heal for the down arrow.
It takes some getting used to, but I feel it's much better for your progress in the long run. Besides, I can't recall any famous players who play on their heals (exclusing the japanese ones since they're long gone.) _________________

People should just play however they feel comfortable...
if you play flat footed and feel fine doing it.. then keep playing flat footed.. if you play with your toes and your good at it.. then stick with your toes.... _________________

I had the same thing. My knees were progressively getting worse from several years of soccer, so I stopped. I still get knee pains sometimes, but for the most part I've found a comfortable way to flat-foot play where it doesn't add stress to my knees.
