The US version, that is. I dont import (not old enough), and this would be my first beatmania ever. I really like the concept of it, and I dont mind the steep learning curve. Plus, its on sale at Target for $40.

Not old enough? Eh Ive been importing for about 3 years and im now a sophomore. I'd sugjest getting the game though JUST for the controller, however I'd look at getting a different game as beatmania USA is crap.

| I bought BM US to start learning how to play, and to get a IIDX controller for very cheap. Once I learned, I moved on to the Japanese versions. So I guess you should do the same? |

Get the game. Learn off IIDX mode NOT 5 KEYS. You would not improve faster.

Yeah, after playing beatmania in the arcade (CM2 and Final) for YEARS, going to IIDX was quite hard. That and playing both games still feels different. IMO, IIDX skills dont translate *too* well into 5 key.

I had played IIDX for a while and tried 5-Key in a local arcade, it was weird, it kind of just felt like a different game. You'd think it'd be easier. I guess maybe after getting over the intial thing of there being less keys (obviously) the skillz might transfer over more rapidly.

I got it. I lkike it. It has enough good songs to satisfy me, since Ive never played the Japenese versions. Ignorance is bliss.

Yeah, this is common. A friend of mine has over 1,000 AAAs on IIDX (DJ Jadin on VJArmy if you want to look up his psychotic abilities), but he still can't quite pass Expert+ on Beatmania The Final.
I would totally and completely recommend Beatmania US. Since all of the exclusives are very easy, it's a really good one for beginners to start with. In addition, it's the best bargain on a IIDX controller you'll find, especially since - in an odd turn of events - the American controller is actually MORE well-made than the Japanese one. Get it, get the flavor of it, then import some of the Japanese styles (6th, 8th, 10th, and/or Red, in my opinion). Forget the age thing, too. That doesn't matter. Just check out toysnjoys.com for some great import stuff.
However, I personally don't think Beatmania (aka 5-key) mode is that bad. It has some great exclusives from original Beatmania (Metal Gear Solid and 321 Stars, specifically), and learning both can serve you well later, as it will make you that much more versatile as time goes on. That said, I recommend learning IIDX mode FIRST, then moving on to Beatmania mode.
(Actually, you have to play both modes anyway in order to unlock the Another difficulty.)

I started with CM2 and played IIDX never gone back to CM2 ever since. For me it's the opposite. Considering I play 2p side cause I'm used to playing on the CM2 TT on the right side. It's easier to play 5k than it is with 7k.
