OK, so next week I start work at a computer camp where I live ( riiight.gif ) and one thing I have to do is run an elective or club. For this requirement, I have decided to do a DDR club. The issue is, what am I going to do about crowd control? A lot of people are expected to join this club, and I don't want people to be left out/wait too long, I also want to both teach the people who are absolutely new to DDR how to play, and teach those with a little experience how to play better. We are expecting to have a lot of DDR foam pads on hand, and several PS2s, but whether or not I can wing 2 DDR setups is yet to be seen.

Have a sign in sheet giving a name and a skill level. First come first serve.

Problem is, only a handful of campers (3?) play on non-light/beginner mode diffuculties - These 3 or so and a lot of the junior counselors play on Heavy, most campers though play beginner/ligt.

(The best was last year, every so often we would bring down foam pads and have these big tournaments - big fun! Now we are doing it every night! biggrin.gif)

Ok, I'm only 14 years old, but I'm assuming your auddiance is teenagers or younger. I've had like up to 10 of my friends over before, most of the time we just play DDR. Between songs we either talk, drink, eat, or just watch whoever is playing.

Try to throw in some songs that they might know or like to grab their attention. My friends and I are really big fans of Naoki songs on DDR Extreme. I know a lot of this is not really that specific, but I hope it helped a bit.

Oh, BTW, for the 3 or so that are better, maybe they would want to work on their Trick DDR, feet work, or endurance.

Edit -- Just noticed you were wondering about crowd controll, not what to do. You could have some people running/walking around if you really wanted to have a certain group on the machines constantly.

About the crowd control - I relaize that this was the wrong title, I did mean what you were talking about (what to do) - *CHANGES TITLE*

Your ideas are very helpful. E7.gif

Then politely ask all the good players to teach the new ones how to play. then do like, a 2 to 1 thing. 2 games for newbs, 1 game for pros. 2 for newbs, one for pros.

And why would a DDR club have so many people that play on beginner.

DDR became moderately big last year event wise - but not everybody played, and not often at best since for the second year in a row we managed to break the plastic part at the front of the guy's RedOctane Pads and after that he became a little cautious to put it bluntly.

The reason for the influx of beginner/light players might be because the massive influx of DDR pads/stuff will allow us to get more people (besides last year's newcommers) to start playing without the reliance on some random guy's pads - and without having to worry about breaking them and making him miserable - More flexibility. I think it will be good to teach them - since nobody taught me last year when I started and was lost for the first few days. disturb.gif

We are going to have a lot of foam pads on hand, so this will not be an issue. riiight.gif

I help lead the DDR club at my school and from my experiences, 75% of the kids are too scared to actually play it. They might play one song a week or two because they're forced to but even then they'll play for like 30 seconds and then step off...leaving more time for the better players to play constantly biggrin.gif

Haha wow....

Hopefully we will be able to convince our players to stay on the pad at least through 99% of the song, no matter how badly they do... E15.gif

Yeah man i have to go with tekkie on this one you may have a lot of soft pads on hand but still the foam is going to mushed and itll be at least (assuming u have 5 or so pads) 100$ to get them all replaced if you could try
to get a cobalt flux or somthing and run like 2 that would propbably save you money also they would last like years and you could keep using them for future clubs.

Well, I don't have a choice now so I will enforce a strict no stomping rule then. If we have warantee on the pads though (don't know), it won't cost us as much as $100 (whenever I get my pads, I ALWAYS go for the warantee(s) offered), and yes we are going to have on hand some 6+ pads. riiight.gif

About the foam getting mushed, I am surry to say we have both the hard and dense foam varities so I will be able to see which one gets mushed the most. My bet is on the dense foam kind.

There's also an FAQ on the ddrfreak main page that shows u how to mod foam insert pads (http://www.ddrfreak.com/library/contributor-article.php?postID=7836373) so that they will be more sturdy as well as give better performance.

I also agree that hard is definately better. Not only will your pads get mushed, curled and broken, they will also rip a ton (4 of my soft pads are ripped and i'm the only one who plays). That's why i switched to metal pads b/c of the ripping and tearing. I guess this won't be that much of a problem if u have lots of duct tape E15.gif laugh.gif

To make sure that nobody doesn't get a turn have multiple setups. Set up some folding chairs and tables for people to sit and wait 4 their turn. Maybe bring some cards (I like uno) or board games (or any kind of games) that people can play while others are playing. Create a nice social atmosphere so that they won't need to focus on who's up next.

Mush yes... but I have never had curling problems, and only 2 pads I have had (non-intec foam pads, RO knockoffs) out of the 14 I have been through alltogether have actually ripped - and that is through 1 hour a day for 6 weeks of heavy mode. riiight.gif

As for the suggestions, I was planning on having 2 2-pad setups of DDR but that might not be possible due to restrictions on what we have to work with, but we are going to do that social atmosphere idea to make it less cumbersome to wait and more open/social. riiight.gif

6 days until I am at work setting this up. riiight.gif

o by the way if u plan on holding tournaments such as doubles freestyle or any sort of doubles for that matter than i highly recomend a flux or maybe
a red octane metal mat but again just me this might be hard to do if u have
only 6 days to do it but thats all the advice i have to offer
good luck and post back and tell how it turns out E1.gif E1.gif
