I would use the bar, but the arcade I go to, people be always be touching the bar while I was playing.

That's really annoying when you lean back and you feel like someones arm when you expect a cold metal bar. Plus at some of the arcades here we have freestylers so people learn not to stand that close or they might get kicked or somthing like that.

This doesn't always work, but I just play something hard enough (I'll mod if I have to) to the point that their legs just say "F this" and they get off because they couldn't even begin to understand such a pattern (works best on ITG)

Otherwise the punching method works well too.

I was at the arcade the other day, and there was this long haired guy playing on heavy doing really bad. He passed his songs with D's but then tried Sakura on standard. This time he had a friend come up on to play the other side, because he had it on so he wouldn't fail, and he was acting all cool holding onto the bar. He was trying to do cool moves and stuff until it was my turn. I went up there and picked heavy, so did he, and we proceeded to play Matsuri JAPAN. I passed it with a high B and he E'd it. We did the same thing with MAX 300 and Drop Out. After we were done he glared at me and walked away.

Ah don't you love that? At my arcade there is a new trend for heaps of emos to gather around the DDR machine and throw in like 50 credits and each have a go and failing at the 2nd or 3rd round every time when they try songs that are WAY out of their reach.
So it was my turn after a good 45 minute wait and one of them decides to join in, playing songs such as So Deep (Random), Tsugaru, Drop Out then Max 300 he also stormed off the pad half way through Max 300 after getting an E in all 4 songs then all his little 'posse' got up and left the arcade E1.gif

Hmm...for some reason the number of shadowers has gone down a lot, personally, now that I think about it.

Usually though, if it's a hard song, I laugh and smile. I know they're playing around, and I guess I have enough humor to let it go.

If it's an easier song I could either mimic them, or freestyle and tell them to get dancin' too (usually, I can follow this up with "cracka") laugh.gif

But it's been so long =( My ego is lonely.

And I agree with Synaesthesia, seems pretty outlandish. But it's still funny, mostly because my friend did have a similar situation, except he actually downed the guy by nailing him in the stomach (and wasn't wearing rediculously short-shorts) laugh.gif

Having good friends also helps.
I was AAA attacking Tsugaru, when someone came up and started shadowing me. I didn't wanna ruin my perfect combo, so I tried not focusing on it. My friend came from his Time Crisis game and kindly asked the kid if he wanted to die.
It ruined my perfect combo because I was laughing so hard at the kid, who decided to get off the pad.

If you're going to lie, you should at least get your terminology correct first.

In my case, I usually expect Shadowers to play R3 as part of S4R.

I agree, time for beer.

If a shadower is on the pad w/me, I beg him to stop, and if he doesn't, I usually begin to cry. If that doesn't work, I simply go home and dream of a better life, one where my friday nights won't be spent at a goddamned arcade.

What? E19.gif

Yeah, it was all staged.

Personally, I'd just leave the shadowers alone since I'm a pretty passive guy. Sometimes my combos are killed because of them, but whatever.

Seriously, what can you do? Asking politely is soooo.... umm... I just don't know the word.

Yea, it's staged. If it were real, I'd expect the kid to glance behind himself to make sure the shadower doesn't try to get revenge.

I'm so sick of shadowers. The moment one gets on a pad while I'm playing, I literally yell until the person gets off. If the person doesn't get off quickly, I give the person a firm nudge off of the pad.

One time I shoved a shadower instead of yelling at him first, and a security guard saw it and gave me a nasty look. laugh.gif

Another time a drunk guy got on the pad next to me, I pushed him off of the pad, and he easily fell because of his intoxication. Moments later, he charged at me (comically, to impress his friends, I Think) and missed. He fell over again, and a security guard took him out of the building.

In case anybody was wondering, I conclude that shadowers tend to be cowards because they shadow only when DDR players are alone. In all of my five years of playing DDR, I have never been harassed by a shadower while with a group of friends.

you do realize that a lot of shadowers play DDR, though just don't know that it's annoying right? The whole coward thing really doesn't apply, I think some genuinely want to practice the song without wasting money as opposed to just harrassing you.

I Play Solo 2000 E15.gif

LOL JK!

Anyways it doesnt really bother me if someone shadows me as long as they dont make any noise.

One time, i was playing Luv to me (AMD Mix) and this kid started to show me, it became very anoying since he was stopming and that gets me off beat, anyways when i got to the "Goodbye my love, i love you too so..." part he tried shadowing me and somehow fell flat on his back laugh.gif It was sooo funny i couldnt help to laugh histerically, and got a "Good" but it was so worth it biggrin.gif

At my arcade, the majority of shadowers are troublemakers who don't care about dance games.

You don't think the kid in the video who jumped on the pad was trying to practice without spending money, do you?

I just stop and stare at them after the song is over. 90 seconds of staring, then mod selection 30 seconds of starting, the song starts and I don't even play. I just stare.

Get the point through.

never had that problem...although now that i think of it, having a person stepping offbeat beside you while you're trying to fc something is as annoying as them trying to talk to you.

guess i'm not going to shadow anyone, unless i know them.

WHY?? Cant you just give them a dirty look after the song is over? Then they'll never do it again.

I assure you, the vid is not staged. This is a kid that frequents my local arcade and often makes a huge scene. He's punched me more than once for taunting him, as well as collapsed to the floor hilariously after playing hard songs. Once, he let out a huge war cry when he passed energizer expert double for the first time. Everyone looked at him really funny and just laughed.

He's really against shadowers. As far as I can tell, he doesn't even like people playing versus with him, but that might be just because he doesn't want to lose.

I freestyle and do some of my more "violent" movies (i.e. roundhouse kicks, breaker sweeps) in the direction of the other pad. The possibility of breaking ones jaw serves as an excellet deterent for would-be shadowers.

I remember this one time when a shadower got on the pad next to me right when I threw a Sweet Chin Music style side kick in that direction. I barely missed his jaw by a few inches. Needless to say the guy never got back on.

I really have no problem with shadowers if I'm cool with them and they behave well. If I'm getting to know a player who I've met the first time and we're becoming friends then I'm alright with them shadowing because I know they're going to respect my turn and behave themselves.

The staring sends in a signal of "Where do you want to be buried?" to them. Seriously, I use my height to tower over the most of them, and my size to stand really close to them.
