|
|
I got a chance to play doubles yesterday. After a few songs, I was hooked. It's about 10 times more fun than singles, even though I had to go back down to easy standard songs. I'm wondering why it's not very popular? I rarely see anybody playing it at the arcade, and nobody really talks about it here. |

If it really is less popular than singles, I'd guess it's because you have to pay twice as much for it in the arcades. _________________

Not at the arcade I go to. 75 cents for 3 songs, and the second player can join in for free. |

Then the machine has a premium activated. Most of the arcades I've been at force you to pay double for versus or double mode. _________________

Not very many people can practice doubles at home unless they're lucky enough to be in possesion of an expensive double mat. I can only play doubles on like Standard or easy Heavy songs. _________________

I can do standard doubles, but I don't do it very often. My machine charges $1.00 for 3 songs, and joint premium is off. So thats $2.00 for doubles, and if you ask me its not worth it. |

That's a good point. I have 2 RedOctane soft pads, but they slide apart during doubles, which makes it rather difficult to play. _________________

Then use velcro strips on the underside and play on carpet. They won't move at all. |

I play doubles every time I go to the arcade, and have passed very hard songs. I agree that it is funner than singles. But most don't play because it is double the cost, or they just are not that good.
I got to the end run of Max 300 heavy though, so I would say I am pretty good at doubles. _________________

That's because the song isn't that hard up until that point. |

The arcade I go to is also $2 for doubles. I play at home with the pad that came with UM3 and the pad that came with Pump. I don't really have any problems with the pads sliding that much even on the hardest songs I've done (which is probably sakura when I failed on the second to last step....) |

One reason doubles isn't popular is because you gotta pay twice as much. Another reason is that singles-addicted players have to learn twice as much technique, and the between-pad combos they find way too tough, so they give up on it.
Where I play, it's 50 cents for 5 songs, so $1.00 for doubles, and I can afford it because it's still at less than 25 cents a song.
And FWIW, Sakura I kept failing right at the end, but I finally got it. |

Taping my mats together worked for me. You just gotta change the tape every so often.
And if, for some reason, you WANT to ruin your pads, play Boom Boom Dollar KOG G3 Mix Heavy Doubles. _________________

i'd say it's a combination of the double price and the fact that peeps are too lazy to learn it. it's a lot of fun, but it takes time and money. kind of like girls ;D. i play doubles though, and it's been very rewarding. it also provides more challenge than singles for 9 and 10-footers. it "nerfs" a few staple hard (single) 9's like cartoon heroes and so deep, but hvam and daikenkai are devilishly hard, bre\-/kdown and (omg) la senorita are refreshingly difficult, and psmo doubles is the hardest stepchart in the game. |

Ummmm, hi, have you met me yet? My name is Cant Stop Fallin In Love:Speed Mix on doubles heavy. That song is quite difficult.
And Renee, I could not agree any more. _________________

Most arcades don't know about or care to enable the Joint Premium setting on DDR (and a lot of places don't want it enabled because 'they lose money', which is ridiculous), which means that most DDR players have to pay twice as much as they would for a Singles game to play Doubles.
It sucks, but it's the truth. You're lucky to have a machine that's set to Joint Premium. Another reason that people at your arcade aren't playing Doubles might be because they don't know anything about the JP setting. I mean, when it's enabled, the big telltale sign is the Japanese Text on the attract screen.
Well...it's in Japanese, 95% of DDR players aren't going to have any idea what it says (heck, our arcade manager enabled it knowing full well what it was and two days later wondered what the scrolling Japanese text said). And most players don't linger on the Style Select screen long enough to see the little JP marker on the bottom left of the screen nor to hear the announcer say "No charge to join in!" And even if they do, they're probably not paying attention anyways.
You might want to tell other DDR players at your arcade that they can play Doubles for 1 Credit on the machine, if they don't know about JP.
And like a few other people have said, it's difficult to practice at home, so most people that play at home and then go to their arcades don't bother to learn it.
Also, while Doubles may be fun, it's really difficult to learn. I can pass just about anything on Singles (short of Maxx Unlimited and PSMO), but I have a really hard time with 8 and 9 foot songs on Doubles because of the crossovers it requires and the amount of jumping from the 1P Pad to the 2P harder songs tend to have. _________________

Meh, it's not that hard, at least there isn't a lot of rediculous double stepping or terribly awkward crossovers in it. _________________

not very difficult, especially for a 9. it's streamy but the step patterns are really easy. i almost fc'd it on my first try, and was barely tired (for comparison, candy star doubles makes me tired, and it took me six or so tries to fc it).
i was looking at songlists and found that Follow the Sun maniac2 double is a 9. now i really wish the local arcade didn't take out the 4th mix plus machine |
