I just played a 200kcal round of workout mode, just out of curiosity, and I can't believe how quickly I burned calories. Set for 160 pounds, Heavy mode, here was my song list (I got equivalent to at least an A on each song):

DDRMax2
1. So Deep
2. Burning Heat
3. Tsugaru
4. Xenon
5. End of the Century
6. Paranoia KCet

Six songs, nine minutes, 200 calories. That's about 1300 calories per hour. Swimming, jogging, boxing...they have nothing to hold against DDR!

workout mode is probably not a good measure of how quickly you burn calories though, especially with songs like so deep where the efficiency of your steps can change the song from a killer to an easy pass.

The calorie counter in workout mode is most defnately not a good way to measure how many calories you burn. It's extremely innacurate; you probably burn about half of what it tells you.

No, a good DDArgh player knows how to minimize movement and get Perfects. It's hardly exercise at all, though I suspect it's more than the otherwise NOTHING that a lot of players would get.

But you didn't really burn that many calories. The games kcal burning reader isn't accurate at all. You probably burned less than 100 calories doing those songs. Swimming, jogging, and boxing are a far better workout than DDR could ever be.

Well, looks like you guys didn't realize that this post was partly mocking the workout mode system...

Of course I don't burn that many calories. That would be completely rediculous. By the time anyone is able to get an A on So Deep, the steps have basically become walking.

NEVER trust the calorie count. It's so off it makes me want to kill myself when I think about how I still have that little bit of pudge! But how can this be!? It said I burned off twice the calories I ate today!?!? I stopped using it ages ago, like when I was on light mode o0 They should really fix that..

At least its a fun way to burn calories.

A lot more fun than running or getting the crap beat out of ya.

You guys clearly don't understand just how energy consuming your legs really are. Look at them, they're a giant trunk of muscle, flesh, and arteries/veins. Also, on average, legs would be maybe one third or your weight. That's anywhere between 40 to 80 pounds you're throwing around that quickly, it's really demanding, and yes, DDR does burn more calories than any conventional sport per hour. Bemani wouldn't have released what, 15 games now with a faulty calorie-counter, which hasn't been changed to date, which means whatever they did, it works.

And to Mexistache, there's a HUGE difference between fruitful cardiovascular training and wasting your time lifting weights.

The calorie counter is an estimate, at best. There is no possible way for them to have an accurate calorie counter with the information you provide the game. It's impossible to tell how many calories a person will burn based on weight alone. For example, you input your weight as 180 lbs. Fine. It tells you you burned 25 calories for the song. The number of calories that person actually burns is going to be different if, say, it's a 5'8" male or a 5'1" female. There just isn't enough data for it to be accurate.

The game can't tell the difference if I play like an idiot and move around a lot or if I DukAmok through the entire song. Also, why would they care if the calorie counter was broken? It's not the central feature of the game; it's not even a very useful secondary.

Maybe, maybe if you played Heavy songs and moved way more than you need to, you'd get something close to the workout you'd get with a conventional sport. Maybe. But when played right, DDR takes a hell of a lot less energy that any (other) sport.

Let me put it this way: I can play Max 300 Heavy no-bar and not be the least bit tired when I'm done. But I can go outside and run fairly quickly for an equivalent amount of time and be much more tired afterward.

I dunno, I'm not sure that the fact that Konami has never fixed the calorie counter doesn't mean it's not broken. Konami owns a chain of health clubs in Japan called XAX. At least, they used to own the chain. I seem to recall hearing somewhere that they don't own it anymore. Anyway, I think all they did with the Diet/Workout mode is they had XAX throw something together, and then they just put it into the game without actually looking over it themselves. I'm guessing It hasn't been changed since because it's just not a very widely used feature.

maybe DDR is a good workout, but no DDR player has the stamina of a marathon runner, or olympic swimmer, the agility and strength of a tennis player or boxer, or the skill and finesse of a basketball player or football player. DDR is also played in short bursts, but i doubt that many high level DDR players are that great of a track athlete either.

in regard to whgat many people are saying i find ddr to help me get in shape for football i was once 285 lbs and now im down to 253 primaroly thanks to lifting weights and ddr and i can do more running and everything like that i dont get tired as fast

when you look at it though ddr is perfect for football because like some people said ddr is in short bursts well so is football an average play lasts about 5-10 seconds and ddr is somewhat like that when you have to go all out for a while so it actually does help with sports

How 'bout we ask Konami how their calorie counter is supposed to work? I'm sure that when they created it they had a specific play style in mind. They maybe jacked it from a treadmill or a homeless man or spent a helluva lotta time putting this thing together; all I know is I don't need my game telling me if I'm fat or not (lol announcer: "It's a UFA; Run faster or you'll never fit into your prom dress!!; Thunder thighs is drowning my music!!")

Hell, it'd be friggin' awesome if we could omit the workout counter to get $5 off the Supernova cs. E15.gif

So true. I'm very close to passing Pandemonium Expert. The last time I played it, I got within 10 seconds of the end of the song. If I run up the stairs, I'm almost completely out of breath. Like I can feel my heart beating inside my head. And my stairwell is not very big at all; maybe 15 steps or so.
