GO! is awesome. I'm looking forward to the steps. And Race Against Time is a nice change of pace, as someone else said. Its definitely not a typical DDR song, but it has a rythym that can be put to steps pretty easily. Grandolin sounds like it would fit more in a shmup than DDR, but I still like it. The only one I don't like is There's a Ryhtym.

Okay, first of all, I was upset by a lot of the responses here, especially about "R.A.T." (haha). My righteous indignation is acting up.

"Grandolin" is techno/classical/jazz all mixed liberally. It has classical and jazz bits that add some heart to a slightly ambient piece of music. Frankly, I think it is quite jazzy. In the hands of an ITG stepchart artist, this could/would probably be an 11 (it is a bit like "Fleadh Uncut", but faster, and with runs.l.."Fleadh Uncut" in SPACE!...meh, you hear me...right?). In DDR, I can see it being like "A", at 8 or 9 feet. I will enjoy the hell out of this song if the cut is done properly and if the steps don't suck. This is my favorite out of all of the entries, but not by a wide margin.
P.S. This song is not crap-MIDI. If you want an example of crap-MIDI, take a look at my songs.

"GO!" screams cliche, or at least mutters it angrily, well...at least mutters it apathetically. Cross "Sakura" and "Sandstorm" (EDIT: "Tsugaru"! Why do I always forget "Tsugaru"?), which I feel has been done before (maybe not this well, but still). I think DM Ashura knows how generic some of his stuff is. I wouldn't say it is bad, and I'm not saying I'm unhappy that it made it to DDR, it is just...well...meh. You know what I mean. It is my third favorite song out of the winners. I will enjoy playing this song, I mean, it is well made, and, despite what I said, is very enjoyable. I'd say it could be an 8, 9, or, in a bit of a stretch, a 10. Remember, this is Konami, not RoXoR.

"Race Against Time" is weird only because IT IS JAZZ. DDR doesn't like jazz, in general. That is why it is awesome that it made it into DDR. I can see how someone might mistake this song for extremely low quality, but I beg to differ - it has a certain fitting style. This is my second favorite song. I would like to see this as a 9 or 10, but I've got a feeling that Konami won't follow the fast rhythms, and it will meet its doom as a 7 or 8 footer. ITG could easily have this song at insane difficulty levels...

I can't stand "There's a Rhythm". But, eh, to each his/her own. It is too low-energy for me. I can hardly see this song as more than a 7 footer. Then again, difficulty is not the measure of all things...

Also, Coolkid27,
ITG songs do not suck!!! More accurately, you suck and are projecting your suckiness onto ITG as you cling to your pitiful DDR skills that cannot get you more than 25 seconds into "HotN" expert. Oh, wait...that's me not being able to get more than 25 seconds into "HotN" expert...

Well, that's my rant.

Actually, most ITG songs would "suck" compared to what people identify as "normal" songs. I think there's a lot of crap on both DDR and ITG. But at least ITG makes up for it with charts/gameplay/scoring/etc.

A little off topic, but do you think HotN sucks? Do you think Go! is better musically than HotN?

Weird...

What makes you ask that? That "HotN" bit was just me combining Freud with ranting and insulting.
I believe "HotN" is better musically than "GO!". I think "GO!" has its moments, but I really enjoy (perhaps read as "am amused to no end by") "HotN". By no means is it my favorite song, but it is pretty neat. Then again, Digital Explosion is perhaps my favorite group...not to say I don't like DM Ashura. I like most of his songs, especially "Euphorium" and "Nautilus", out of the stuff he entered (I would have preferred "Nautilus" over "GO!").
On a related topic, I think both "Grandolin" and "RAT" (great, I wonder if that's going to catch on...) are better musically than "HotN". Perhaps it is partially because jazz-style music is so much less conventional nowadays than...whatever "HotN" is...quasi-8bit techno?...
I'm not going to talk about "There's a Rhythm". Just not my cup of tea. Or rather, it is my cup of tea, but I don't drink tea at all. Go ahead and put it on DDR, but you won't find me playing it unless it has the GREATEST STEPCHART EVAR (tm). Or unless I'm unearthly bored.

The songs to me sounded more unrealistic than I expected. I like GO!, but the other songs sound like stuff I could easily produce on a music studio program. They don't even sound as realistic as the Thuggie D. songs.

EDIT: I like There's A Rhythm, though. I guess Race Against Time just sounded too Garage Band-ish (at least in the beginning).

Electronica isn't supposed to sound realistic.

I'm comparing these songs to what Naoki, dj TAKA, etc., write. All four are going to show up on DDR. Some of these songs sound like they were made on Garage Band, and that is why I said they sound unrealistic.

Heh, I thought you meant "performed by a garage band." Heh, heh. In any case, I don't think that all songs must be compared to dj TAKA and Naoki. There are different styles of songs and different artists with different sounds. So, as the contemporary proverb goes, suck it.

Wow, going more through these four, I really like Go! the least.
Bland.

I don't care for the others though.

DM Ashuras song is amazing. Reminds me of sakura, and it has a good techno/trance beat that ive been wanting to see in DDR.

I never said that all ITG songs suck, but I understand how you felt I implied that. I love many many many ITG songs. I just said that the contest winners' songs sounded as they belonged in ITG and not DDR.

Um, why? People should be able to share whatever they think about any of the songs. Of course, mindless, "This song stinks LOL!" posts are uncalled for, but as long as people are reasonable about it, there shouldn't be a problem.

We just have to remember that each post is someone's opinion and should not be taken personally.

To the person who said I sucked..who told?

That's the problem I'm talking about, not the songs.

You know, this is REALLY ironic.

Originally, I only planned on entering Euphorium, Nautilus, and Obelisk. I entered GO! somewhat reluctantly at some of my friends' recommendation. That happened to be the one that won.

To be honest, when Stillwind contacted me to say that GO! had made it and Euphorium hadn't (since only those two made it to finalist status), although I was of course extremely happy I'd made it, I was actually rather disappointed that Euphorium wasn't the one they'd chosen. I actually asked why, and Stillwind said that although Euphorium was a great song, they wanted a variety of winners, so that no two of the winners were really in the same genre. So, in a way, Zerofuser got the genre I wanted. E10.gif Also, he said that the 5/4-ness of it would make it unique.

So yeah, all of what you guys are saying... to be honest, I agree. GO! isn't my best work. But, when it's cut down to DDR length and edited, the song gets MUCH less boring, in my opinion. And besides, look at it this way... now that I'm going to have my stuff in DDR, maybe next time they'll take something that will be much better.

I encourage you all to listen to the other songs I entered into the contest. You can hear them on my Broadjam page. Please listen to those so you get a better idea of how I write.

---Bill

P.S.: The reason you guys say it sounds like Tsugaru is because it uses the same instrument, a shamisen. It's a Japanese traditional instrument. Personally, though, I don't think that just using the same instrument as a song makes it a copy of said song. Interestingly enough, my inspiration for GO! wasn't from DDR or any Bemani at all. I got the idea while I was at the Georgia Tech arcade and was watching my friend play Yoshimitsu's stage on Tekken 5. biggrin.gif

Go! could easily make a 10. EASY. If C. Foy got rights to making a stepchart, I'd be prepared to see a 12 come out of it, of course, Foy is weird like that.

Yeah, then the song would be slaughtered.

Race Against Time reminds me of music that could fit in perfectly to a Sonic the Hedgehog game. It would be really interesting to see this in IIDX as well. This is definately a nice change of sound for DDR.

There's A Rhythm is REALLY catchy, I love it. It's actually an R&B tune that will be in DDR that isn't ghastly on the ears, and would be a freestyle's song of choice for whoring.

GO!, well... with it being the first 5/4 song in DDR, and a really energetic dance song, albeit fast. This song deserves to be in IIDX as well. Hahah. I really await to see how well/bad they cut the song and make steps for it. It's got the high energy levels of most DDR songs. Congrats Bill on getting this one in. biggrin.gif

Grandolin, really reminds me of RPG style music, and I liked it none-the-less, but it's the least favourite of mine out of the four.

Congrats to all the winners with this though. biggrin.gif
