In the long run, a metal pad is the better decision. |

Some of the soft pads are better than others. I had a Game Stop brand pad that was eons better than my Mad Catz pad. Mad Catz makes AWFUL pads. Never EVER buy one. My Game Stop pad was great....until the down arrow broke. I've broken the down arrow on a Konami pad (came with MAX2) and that Game Stop pad. Unfourtunately, the Mad Catz pad still works, but it is newer.
I recently purchased a RedOctane Ignition 3.0 and I am very happy with it. I'm getting A's on things I could never even pass before. However, I do notice much move severe ankle and calf problems when playing harder songs than I noticed on my other mats. It's either because A) the foam doesn't give enough support OR B) I play on my toes too much.
But anyway, the cheap-o soft mats are obviously not the best choices. |

I bought my first pad at EB games and it was a $40 one with a foam insert.
I played on that for the past month and a half, I was doing 10 footers with no problem, and today I just nailed to a piece of plywood. I just A'd sakura on heavy.
My friend bought and ignition from best buy, he played only 6 10 footers and the up arrow stopped working.
He returned it and did what I did to mine.
He says it's about 1000000000 X better then what he had.
Cheap pads don't suck, if you mod them. _________________

I don't see what you people are complaining about. I have been using my soft pad for a few months now and am having no problems. I can AA basicaly any 7 feet or less, A any 8-9 and B any 10 footer. I havn't been playing DDR for too long "mabye a year" and at all the arcades I play at, even with no shoes on, I can barely even pass A with a D. So I think it is the other way around here... |

There is a difference playing on a soft pad on a soft carpet, compared to playing on a hard surface with shoes on. I'm the same way, on a soft pad, I can hold my own on most songs. I've even managed to barely pass Max 300 and Legend of Max. But I go to an arcade, and I can't do half the songs on the DDR machine. Soft pads are good for one thing. LEARNING! I am making my hard pad, so I can train with shoes on, and hopefully get good at the arcade. _________________

Not all of them suck. Some are actually really nice. After the left and right arrows on my konami softpad stopped working (due to me folding it along those arrows ) I bought that $30 bundle with the ITG game and two softpads and im still using them to this day. On my unmodded pads i can pass all of the 11s on ITG1 and can almost pass Vertex Expert on it as well (those damn mines). Best package i've ever bought. |

i beg to differ...the konami soft pad is definitely the best cheap 4-panel pad ever. I played on it for over a month on heavy without modding and could still get As and AAs. Sure, i didnt do as well as i do on my friends afterburner, but still that's pretty good considering i spent $50 for it with a game. Also i got it with a 2 year warrenty at best buy. Now thats what i call a deal! |

futime mats are good imo....the ones with the extra clear plastic layers on each side.
Only problem is the sliding...but that can be easily fixed. |
