If you are ripping a song from your CD to make it an MP3, use WavePad. Even though it doesn't support opening an MPEG4 file, it surely can rip any audio from a CD, reguardless of file type. (I use this program when making my simfiles). _________________

I've been making song files mp3's by burning them to a disc and then ripping them to Windows Media so I can find mp3's of them in My Music. This method works for me, but I think it's very weird and there must be better ways of accomplishing this without wasting CDs. _________________

I'm use iTunes to rip from CD to mp3. It can also convert from .mp3 to .aiff., .wav, and apple lossless. i think it can even open mpeg4's, but i'm not to sure if it can convert.
www.itunes.com (P.C. and Mac)
if you want to edit .mp3's, check this out.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
it's an open sorce .mp3 editor. don't know if that will helps with your situation, but it's good to know.
and if you can't get a converstion from mpeg4 to .mp3, try this. get a stereo mini male to male connection from radioshack (it looks like the end of a headphone connection, but instead to connecting with headphones, it has the stereo mini connections at both ends).
for the next step, use an audio recording program on your computer (audacity can do this for you). get it set up to ready to record.
using the stereo mini male to male connector, plug one end into the headphone/speaker jack, and the other into the mic jack. play the song, then press record on the recording program. if done right, then it should have recorded the music from the computer back to the computer.
now... i haven't done this proceedure yet. however, i've read about people doing this and it working (using male to male connector to recapute sound). SO USE THIS PROCEEDURE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
